Interesting reading. Remember you all helped me with this a couple years back! Great advice.

We could sure use a lot more people who know how to stand on their “own two feet” in the world today.

Ain't that the truth!

My GS (12) just moved back in with me and I was truly saddened at how little male influence he's had over the last 8 years (not for the lack of a male in the household).

For example: he didn't know a single knot; couldn't bait or cast; had to be shown how to put a socket on a ratchet wrench; couldn't steer up a wheelbarrow...

He's probably learned more in the few months he's been back than in the 8 he's been gone.

His grades have gotten a lot better too. I've been giving him a lot of OJT-for-dropouts type chores (aka sh@t work) and put a 1 hour limit on his computer time (unlimited if he's doing something educational).

I haven't had any luck getting him to work out with me but I just got him a basketball hoop and he seems to like it (we'll have to see how long his interest lasts). I've also signed him (along with my 5 yr old GS and his dad) up in my Balintawak (Filipino Martial Art with sticks and knives) class. I'm hoping that he likes it better than the kids no-hitting-allowed karate class he dropped out of. As much as the two like play sword fighting with the pool noodles & PVC, I think he will -- just need to make the boring basics fun.

Where I buy my night crawlers, they are sold in little boxes of 18. Every where I go, they are sold that way.

Market your worms with the goal of minimizing environmental hazards.

A. Container: perhaps a deposit to incentivize people to return them instead ofjust tossing them. Also some jurisdictions have banned polystyrene foam.

B. Some places have been invaded by jumping worms. Buying worms from you make sure that invasives are not inadvertently spread. This can be used to market to gardeners also.

C. Rewards program for repeat customers.

Good luck. Have fun!

...in response to where to buy nightcrawlers...sorry, I forgot to quote reply...

You might be able to find larger batches on Amazon but if you're considering farming them be forewarned that it would be a difficult endeavor due to the 5 ft depth of their burrow.

I tried doing it in my worm farm and it was a complete failure.

Tell your customers to bring a fully biodegradable container then charge them triple if they don't.

The prefab model will work great.

The reason I would still lean towards a DYI is because of it's 'entrepreneurial' aspects (ie, reducing start up costs, obtaining venture capital (from you) vs. sweat equity, etc). That's your primary motivation, correct?

Besides, I really enjoyed teaching my grandkids how to build vs. buy (or how to unclog the sink/toilet instead of calling RotoRooter).

If you do decide to go the DYI route, I would encourage you to include your grandson in all steps (design, cost estimates, shopping, construction...).

Hello Papa D
Yes a DIY project would be great.
Do you have any suggestions on how to make one 🤔
Anyone who also has first hand knowledge of a DIY worm farm I would be most interested.

Good Day-
as a 37 year serial Entrepreneur, I looked into a business plan to make Organic Fertilizer--my research led me "Worm castings" Worm poop for short-. Can't remember the name, but a company from Wisconsin or Minnesota sells self contained worm farm units, that breed worms...the unit effectively provides an excellent breeding environment, and an easy separation process of Worms & Poop. They apparently breed like crazy, meaning lots of poop & worms to sell. (hint-the BEST organic fertilizer- sells for more than the worms!) And with the proliferation of Organic Food (and weed), The organic fertilizer market is burgeoning! and worms will always be great bait!
Peace Out-
H Henry

Hello stagers,
I'm seeking your advice on a small scale DIY worm farm to teach my Grandson how to own and run a small business.
Red worms would be called Lil Gizmos
Night Crawlers would be called Gizmo's Big Ens
I've checked into the various permits and fees needed, I'm looking into packaging.
This would be a small and local venture.
Our plan is to sell by the worm.
We would also offer to buy back the container and dirt.
The purpose of this venture is not to make a lot of money, just to break even, or perhaps a small amount. The main purpose is to teach responsibility and entrapanourship.

Commander:

I truly admire your drive to help teach your young'uns. Let us know when worms are available and I'll will buy when ready to help out. We had our son and daughter pay rent from the time they were 12 just to learn those responsibilities, they were shocked at how much money that we saved from their rents so when they graduated and moved onto college they had some working funds. They learned hard work and being on time and proud of your work can get you places.
I had to start at 9 and never got a cent back but the lesson was well learned and well appreciated later in life.

Commander there is all kinds of YouTube videos on how to make this stuff. around here a dozen nightcrawlers is $4. I got a very thick styrofoam cooler from a buddy and I believe it was from him ordering steaks through the mail. I do not use a lid I put a piece of cardboard over the top and keep it in my barn up off the floor. I went out today and added some dry manure and shredded newspaper and a little bit of lettuce to my Bin . I went out in my pasture and flipped over cow Pattys and picked up worms. I'm not sure what they are but I'd say night crawlers and red worms. They ranged from 5" to 6"inch night crawlers to some very very small not a quarter inch long. I've found over the years they like bananas
,melon rine, a little bit of coffee grounds. I grind up egg shells also.

Good for you!
Thats quite the education you’re giving him! Not to mention teaching him respecr.
I asked my son to help spread topsoil when he was 9. He complained, I got pissed (At the complaining not the work) and told him I’d pay him 50 dollars (1985) if he did it himself. It took him 2 weeks. I paid him and he asked what else would you like done? I gave him a 3 lb hammer, safety glasses and work gloves and told him I’d pay him 75 dollars if he chipped them away and put them in a wheelbarrow. That took 6 weeks From that point on he moved around the neighborhood doing various jobs. He was self sufficient all through high school and beyond. Best 125 dollars I ever spent. He learned work ethic.
