The fishing bug is eating me up.
Can’t wait to learn how to fly fish. Can you fly fish with regular 4 pound test line only. Using a cheap rod not a fly rod. Does a fly just tie to the line with a regular type of knot? I guess I’m going to find out 🤓

Use a casting bubble ahead of the fly so you can cast your fly easier.

The answers to your questions is NO. There are lots of ways to fly fish but not using the proper equipment is going to reduce your enjoyment substantially.

It is a bubble that you run a line through and fill with water to give it weight. Son started fishing this way and now he’s fly fishing.

Some fishing shops that sell fly fishing gear give free lessons on how to cast a fly line/ use a fly rod. It’s worth finding one if those and seeing what you think about it all before you do any equipment buying.

Consider paying for a guided trip. Use their equipment and decide if it’s something you like. Have fun!

A casting bubble looks like a clear plastic bobber that can be filled with water to whatever level you need for weight to cast.

Fly casting you throw the tapered line and the fly and leader follows..

a fly rod is also great for pan fishing, droping up and down with out casting. Also crappies and big blue gills are more fun with a fly rod.
