Dermatologist prescribes a special Sun Tan Lotion for protection for exposed skin areas and I wear UV protective clothing from Columbia Sports wear.
As kids we didn't know about UV damage, today we do. Take precautions.

When I was kid, baby oil with iodine was the closest thing to sunscreen that existed. I remember the first Coppertone ads.

I remember early coppertone commercials, I remember people using baby oil, I never understood it, trying to cook yourself? Just jump in a deep fryer

Krismt7 - Wishing you well on getting back into fishing!

I recommend wearing polarized glasses like other people have said in their comments. They give you protection from flying objects and UV rays as well as enhancing visibility on the water. Don’t forget to attach a pair of Chums or other brand of straps to secure them. You don’t want them falling overboard or blowing off if you’re in a boat.

A friend took his two small children out in his boat and the son did a sideways cast and smacked a lure in his face! It hit him on the glasses and one hook went through the frame and pinned both lure and glasses to the bridge of his nose. He had to get the boat back onto the trailer and drive to the ER with a plug across his face and two upset kids in the truck. Without the glasses, he could have had serious eye damage. Wear your glasses!

Personally, I haven’t worn gloves while fishing but probably should. I opt for using SPF50 sunscreen. My dermatologist recommends that you don’t go outside without a headcover and sunscreen. He and I both wear Tilley brand hats (Made in Canada) when we’re outdoors. The models we use are lightweight, have wide brims, provide SPF protection, have chin straps, have a hidden pocket for cash, float if they land in the water, and come with a lifetime guarantee. Mine has almost fourteen years of travel and wear in all kinds of weather and it’s still going. (If you go to the Tilley website, read the story about the elephant!)

Hope this helps!

Eagleclaw I use to fish with a guy that was terrible for hitting others.

He hit every one he ever fished with be it his boat or others.
Only one he hooked was himself.
On my old glastron I had 3 rods in holders behind me.
He was forever wrapping his line around them.
It's a 17' boat 🤣

Back in St. Paul I found a little lake. I think it was called Pickerel. It is weed city and access is only with a canoe. Ours had a keel, a flat bottom and had a wide beam. It was fairly tough to roll. You could stand in it and cast. There we were, my wife and I, hunting Northern Pike, standing on opposite sides of the boat. She had a spinning set up with a Berkley Johnson Silver Minnow. The weedless part was already long gone at that time. She wound up to cast swinging that rod behind her. The leader wraped around my neck and poised that silver minnow so that when she went forward in her cast the lure dug in well. And then as she wondered what the resistance was, without looking she gave it another tug! This is the main reason I de barb my lures to this day. Thank God that lure was one that I did this with prior to going fishing with my darling. How this brings me to the topic of sun screen, I don't know? But too much armor and my wife could have not given me the point. What fun would that be? I could have worn a stainless steel neck guard. But then if I fell overboard, would the weight bring me to the depths? Or, could I slip out of the boat from wearing that SPF50? That stuff is slick you know. I am considering one of those nifty SPF hoodies though. I'm looking for one that less then $20 in brown. Because part of this thread actually lead me to explore the colors we wear VS. the fish we catch. If you find that hoodie let me know. Try that in your browser.

If I don't have a hoodie sometimes I'll just pull the gaiter up over my neck and ears, then put the ball caP on

I've done that also Jimmy.
I've become very aware of sun proofing.

Yes most wear gloves anymore just for sun protection since those of us over 60 are spending a lot of time with dermotoligst, most of us wear glasses so safety glass I have not noticed but cataracts from the sun should keep you in sun glasses. A lot of older people have now taken to wearing buffs for their ears and nose. I also learned the hard way mesh ball caps do nothing for the top of your head.

Wallmart has good polarized glasses and fishing gloves (some of the gloves have fingers missing which helps to tie with out removing gloves. Also for $19. polarized glasses with lower magnified area at lense bottom.
