Welcome to the stage. I've only smelt fished in Chicago on Lake Michigan.
I thought it was just a Great Lakes thing.
Smelt fishing was from 9PM - 9AM. We threw in the net, built a fire, drank beer, BBQ'd, and hoped we didn't have to pull fish out of the net. We were young and dumb.
How does smelt fishing work out west in the river?

been a very long time for me but as I recall (1978) in Oregon a dip net from shore or wading on a 10 -12 foot pole with a 25 pound limit

That's exactly how west coast river smelting works, long handled net dipped in the current and swept down stream

Welcome r47, according to my cousin who is from Longview, Washington who was visiting us here in central Illinois today, the smelt run has started.
Good luck and post some pics of netting those little guys. Always enjoyed eating good fresh smelt.

The first opener was 1/2 day on Feb 15th on the cowlitz, no more scheduled as yet, maybe won't be, the only way to really hit it is to be on a web site that will notify you, or keep daily check on the odfw wdfw
