It sure looks like a Brown to me. I do not believe there are any Lake trout in Calif except in Tahoe and Donner lake. Did you catch it on light tackle? I caught one that size out of the Truckee River on 4 lb test using a Panther Martin against the current! We could not fit that monster in our cooler, a neighbor at our campsite came by to ask us how we did, I told him about my Brown and how big it was and he kind thought I was exaggerating.....until I showed him the fish and then he could not believe that I caught that fish in this small river! I was able to get some pictures on our instamatic camera and ate it that night. We drove into town the next morning my family and I in my Camaro and my parents in my dads F150. As we were driving into town, I was in front and my parents behind me, I could see in my rear view camera, that someone had left the camera on my dads step side! So I signaled my dad to pull over and as we were I saw the camera fall off the step side and my Father ran over it! That was the only proof of the biggest trout that I ever caught in my life, and its just a fisherman's story now!

And you have to be in Germany to call it a German Brown.

Actually, there are several lakes in the Tahoe area that have Mackinaw, Lake Trout, in them. But I'm not sure Bowman is one of them. No matter, that pic is definitely not a Laker either way.

Guys, I think it's a stocked steelhead. The spots aren't right for a trout.

Some guys are calling it a Lkae Trout. To me it’s tail is too square to be a lake trout. The pic doesn’t show marking veery well making an accurate ID difficult. Brook trout has a much more square tail but that would be a giant BT

Hey alldave welcome to the stage. In my opinion it doesn't have the markings of a brown but they do very in colors in different areas. It looks more like a cutthroat or a cuttbow but without the red color on the lower jaw it is hard to say for sure. Here are a couple of pics of each that I have hooked through the years.

Many lakes in NorCal hold Mackinaw…here is one of many I’ve caught in Bucks Lake (Quincy,CA).

I believe it to be a female German brown to. I have got very old browns that do not have the red spots anymore.

Yes, you can see the forked tail, the white markings on the body and the fins that look like a Char/Brook Trout.

Ok according to the Wy game and fish a brown trout lacks spots on the tail and light colored halos around the dark spots, may have some red or orange spots. Distinguished from brook trout by dark spots on a light background versus light spots on a dark back ground for brook trout. Brook trout have light spots on a dark background, some red oar blue halos concentrated on lower half of body. Lower fins and tail have striking white border offset by black. Brook trout have a square tail. Lake trout have light colored spots on a dark background. Distinguished from brook trout by a deeply forked tail and absence of red or pink spots. Splake is a cross between a male brook trout and female lake trout. It can exhibit characteristics of either .

Cutthroat trout have black spotting concentrated towards tail......except on the snake river cutthroat which has a uniform distribution of fine black spots.....few or no spots on head, red or orange slashes under jaw and no white tips on fins. Rainbow trout distinguished from cutthroat by the presence of white tips on fins.
