Pirate Harbor Community just South of the City of Punta Gorda offers quick access to Charlotte Harbor for those interested in Kayak Fishing, flats boat fishing, as well as off-shore through Boca Grande. There are abundant back country opportunities within the surrounding aquatic preserve and plenty of grass flats in the sand bars and oyster beds in the open water areas. Abundant in redfish, trout, snook, pompano, cobia, Spanish mackerel, flounder, mangrove snapper, tarpon of course and shark. Old Florida style living--no intrusive HOA demands, plenty of nature and diverse birdlife with a major rookery nearby.

My parents lived in Punta Gorda before Charlie came through. They loved the area. Dad was Commodore of CHYC. Lots of boating and lots of fishing!

Ian did a number on Charlotte Harbor--but fishing coming back, although worried about losing grass because of all the pollution from new development and discharges from the Caloosahatchee via Lake Okeechobee.

We don't have a lot of coming up from the caloosahatchee.
But the peace and myakka rivers certainly influence the harbor.
There in pirate harbor the clean Sea water runs straight in form the Gulf.
After it hits west wall it travels up and down the east side of the harbor as most of the river water travels down the west Wall .
hat makes the fishing better out front of pirate harbor.

Your point is well taken. I know the dynamics of mixing flows from three sizable rivers with tidal flow makes the hydrology of Charlotte Harbor complicated. Following Ian we had a terrible bloom of the algae Caulerpa, which has diminished our grass flats. While the Peace River and Myakka may be dominant north of Pirate Harbor, it would not surprise me if we were not also impacted to some degree by the intermittent heavy nutrient loads from the Caloosahatchee. Thanks for your comment.
