Playing Card trivia

Hello stagers,
I just attended our monthly magicians meeting.
This is where we get together and show and discuss new tricks and discuss potential routines.
It's a very fun and informative learning session.
During a card trick gone wrong one of our magicians said " He's not playing with a full deck". When I asked where did that expression originate? I was surprised that none of them knew the correct answer. I thought every Prestodidgater ( magician )
would know that.
So I pose the question to all you.
Where did the term not playing with a full deck originate?
When I told them the answer magician said
"You certainly know alot about magic"
I hope so I've been doing it for nearly 50 years.

Where did it originate not its meaning. I have no clue, but I would think that it certainly could have originated in the U.S. Congress 🤔

Possibly in the old west, or on a steamboat on the Mississippi River. Lots of gamblers!

When I was a freshman in college. One weekend, there was a college student rodeo and several of us went to see what expertise those riders had. Nothing special. But coming back to the dorm, there was a poker game in progress. We were all invited to play.

Not having anything to do, I sat down intending to play a few hands. It so happened that i was passed the deck to deal. Now, I am not an expert, but this deck was short by more than 8 or 10 cards. I innocently said, "Where are all the cards?" One of the guys who had been playing all night confessed he was saving some Aces and face cards. It almost started a fight because he was cheating the other players. He gave back all his winnings. Just Sayin...RJS

In college we were playing a Round Robin Euchre Tournament as we were waiting to play the next table I noticed one dealer dealing from the bottom of the deck. I confronted him when we sat down, which he promptly denied.
I told him
that's okay I'm a magician and know how to stack a deck better than you do. Let me demonstrate.
I'll stack the deck and you cut the deck or reshuffle it to your hearts content.
He did and I delt a lay down hand in red to my partner and one in black to myself. They had nothing.
Now you stack the deck and allow me to cut it only once. Witch he did and he delt a lay down hand to my playing partner in black and one to me in red.
Then I told him
I can do this all night and I don't think you partner has any clue as to what happened.
So how about we play a honest game?
The game was therefore honest and we barely won by one point with everyone watching.

Not rowing with both oars in the water!
Elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top floor, a few bricks short of a full load, etc.

Not knowing the answer, I confess to tapping Google on this and not surprised at whose name came up, as I've always considered this person one of the most brilliant wordsmiths of our time!

Okay stagers here's the answer to where did the term not playing with a full deck originate.
In 1765 the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act upon the colonies to raise funds for the debt England incurred during their war with France.
Anything that had the official Stamp of England was taxed.
It just so happens that in a deck of playing cards only the ace of spades had the the official seal of England. By removing the ace of spades the colonists didn't have to pay the tax. That is also why the ace of spades also has such a bad reputation.
Hence the expression. Not playing with a full deck.

That's one theory. A majority of Google results maintain that comedian George Carlin first came up with the expression in a comedy skit he did in the early '60s. There's no earlier documented appearance of this idiom in popular culture.
