Only other hints for you as most has already been covered.
1) Long nose Vice Grips work better than Needle Nose pliers.
2) Besides the worms, at Walmart you can also get small raw shrimp in a bag.
I split the bag into 4-5 tupperware containers and freeze them. Then when I go fishing I grab one, add some water and by the time I'm at the water they are thawed. For Pan fish, use small pieces that cover the hook.
Once you start going for catfish, use bigger hooks and bigger pieces of shrimp.
I also agree with the long shank hooks and later for the Catfish circle hooks as those don't get throat hooked.
They slide back up and hook the lip.

Agree with Zebco 33 & Worm/nightcrawlers, a decent bobber too.
You ( mom ) could chuck a minnow out on a large bobber.

I started both my sons out on light rods with good Zebco reels and a bobber and worms and fished ponds know for bluegill. The idea is to get them catching and not become bored!!

Don't push it. If the kid wants to quit after 5 minutes call it off do it next time. And just tell stories about how much you love fishing on the way home. Got to build the desire. Not making a fight. Nothing like the face of a kid catching their first fish. And keep it simple. Not all kinds of equipment. Small hook alive bait a bobber. Let the fish cuts itself. Don't put it too much equipment on so it can't even tell if there's a fish on there

I like the suggestions. I would add, don’t handle the pole without a license, you may be charged with fishing without a license. The other is the bait. It is pretty easy to use crappie nibbles, instead of worms and he’ll still be able to catch bluegill/ sunfish. Less mess and he can concentrate on fishing and not the mess.

Hi, I'm just here hoping I can get some pointers on taking my 8 year old boy fishing for the first time. I haven't been in years, and I really want him to have a good time. Any suggestions on well, everything, would be so welcome! What's a good pole for a kid the first time around? Something sturdy because he's pretty rough, but easy for him to handle? Takes him a little to get coordinated and he gets frustrated easy. I thought we'd just go with basic liver and a 10 lb line and give Lake Mary a shot this weekend. Pic of me and my dude, if it's allowed. Thanks for any ideas!

Starsha,
Here's my anticipation.
You know you are trying to hook your son on fishing.
I predict (what you may not know) he will be only one of two.
Wait till you catch your first. It's pretty cool.
I remember this many decades later when me and my fishing partner took his sister (never fished before) out with us and she caught a nice small mouth bass. I can still see the wide grin on her face.
It will last both you and your son a lifetime connection.

Starsha,
Though I know this is from Louisiana and not Mississippi, here's the one I always play in the car driving to our fishing hole.

I would start with a spin casting ( closed face) reel . you can find some relatively cheap combos at Wal-Mart , Chances are your boy will out grow this type of a rig in a few years ,but its easier for him to learn how to cast with this type. I would use night crawlers on a number 6 hook . Cant go wrong with crawlers ! Good luck!!!

I grew up in Kosciusko. For 8 and just getting started, when the bream start feeding you can locate a bed and drop crickets on a small hook with a bobber and catch 20 in an hour.

Not sure on a lake or pond, but ask around and someone will know where to go catch some in a month or two.

I started all three of my grandsons on a Cane pole. The following year they graduated to the Zebco rod and reel. The most important thing is to get them on fish right away. As stated by many before size doesn’t matter. If you can accomplish that, he will be hooked for life.
