Son Ben and Gregg did a bit of ice fishing today on Promised Land lake in the Poconos. Had 3.5 to 4” of ice which is not too comfortable for me. They caught some gills, perch and snot rockets but not all that great for first ice. Pretty cold and quite windy and without an ice shelter would have been miserable, they said I didn’t miss much.

Neat Brad. What are the red bags. Looks like a depth finder.

Yeah Gordon, they’re flashers that show depth and your jig in one color and approaching fish to your lure in another. Kinda fun and allow one to get on the fish a bit better.

It is interesting to me seeing other people walking on the water, but Brad I don't think any amount of ice thickness would make me feel secure. Keep the pictures coming, especially pictures of the fish they catch so that I remember what the different fish there are waiting for us.
Until then stay warm and ready to wet a line

Nice pic-info BK and looks like your boys have everything needed for ice fishing. You and your boys sure do make the most of fishing year-round. Good going!

Veterinarians are usually above average intelligence…about 25 years ago I was the President of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association and one of the perks were you were invited to all the neighboring states meetings with everything comped except travel…
I was invited to Indiana’s State meeting with Walleye Fishing from 6-noon then lunch and then meetings until 5:00 or so. What a wonderful idea for increasing your attendance? I wasn’t able to attend but filed the number for future reference.
We had a family member getting married in December 4-5 years later in Northern Indiana and I called their state director and told them I was going to be in Port Clinton for a long weekend and could they set me up with a guide and take me Walleye Fishing…
His immediate answer without much of an explanation was No?
NO? I asked why and his answer floored me as he said “the water is too hard to fish that time of year?”
WHAT water too hard???
Yup every thing liquid “freezes” that time of year in that location…
DUH???

Looks like the boys have a good setup Brad, but still too cold for my blood. Thanks for the picture. Good luck kids.

Thanks DV, I was invited to join but passed on what I thought was marginal ice .The boys are pretty much “balls to the walls” in any conditions.

Yeah Fred, with the marginal ice conditions and the temps and wind I graciously declined. Generally, first ice is the best fishing but they didn’t do all that well. Some gills, perch and snot rockets but nothing all that spectacular. I stayed by the fire and watched some football.

Nice 😊. After all of my fishing 🎣 spots freeze, I go waterfowling until the ice is gone. This season I file a report for each trip for a Harvest Survey. Got $160 reward for shooting a reward band greater snow goose and 3 reward band American black ducks. Usually walk nearly 4 miles on most trips. No hunting on Sunday in NJ.

That’s pretty cool bands, I’ve shot quite a few ducks and geese but never a banded one. I guess your moniker must be good luck.
