Skagit River WA Steelhead
Washington Fishing

I see the Skagit is open for Steelhead starting February 3rd between Concrete an Marblemount. Does anyone have any tips and locations for good shore fishing? I have chest waders and would like to know good spots, lures to use, etc.

I don’t think anyone will give you secret spots. My advice is to go to Howard Miller Park in Rockport. Ask around, watch the other fishers, and make friends.

Fly or spinning?
Fly means streamers, light spoone or strike indicators with jigs.
Spinning can add bobbers above shrimp or eggs and maybe yarn. Orange and red.

Is spinning with diving plugs effective at all?

Yes. I suggest Quickfish or Flatfish as plugs. And some folks wrap herring filets around them with mono; or lightweight 4”/5” spoons.

Thanks. Kwikfish with a herring wrap is effective on the Columbia for both salmon and steelies.

This guy is a bank fisherman. Best not confuse him with boat fishing plug pulling techniques. And fly fishing doesn’t include spoons, spinners, or float and jig.

He mentioned spin fishing, not fly fishing. He doesn’t appear confused, unless he’s confused about why you’re commenting to me instead of responding to his request? The SGR comment is useful.

I just talked to an old timer who lives on the lower part of the Skagit. He said plunking spin glow corkie, yarn exactly like you do for Pinks works just as well for Steelhead. Kind of surprised my. I always thought Steelhead liked to chase and be agitated.

That’s what they use in Northern California. Having fished on both coasts from top to bottom, I’ve observed that what catches fish seems more determined by what the locals use than what the fish want.

Same with spin glows, corkies and yarn on the Coquille, the Sixes, Siuslaw and Santiam rivers in Oregon back when I was walking river banks. I learned that from family and local fishermen and had success with both salmon and steelhead using those techniques. Good luck and tight lines!
