Going to try night fishing off a pier, what lures or baits would be the best choice?

I always use a 3 oz. pyramid weight with some bloodworms when fishing off piers but recently squid and shrimp has also worked really well

Fresh never frozen shrimp and I can’t emphasis this enough. Never use frozen stuff

At night on a pier, one of the best ways to attract fish is bait, like fresh shrimp, surf clams, bloodworms or squid. Something will almost always take bait at night, just make sure you use a hook and bait piece that is the right size (not too big or small) for the fish under the pier. Go smaller if you're not hooking up. As for lures, try jigging or bouncing something shiny or colorful under any lights that shine on the water. Big predators may hide just outside the light!

If you catch anything use fish parts for bait if the shrimp is slow to get bites on. I used to go fishing every Friday night and sometimes go back on Saturday night on Piers in Orange County California. I just brought an iced tall 6 pack and a rod with good line. The big group of Mexican guys would bait your rig. They would replace bait hook etc. if you lost it. If I caught anything better than Mackerel I would keep it and go have a late night fish fry at home. The Mackerel was what they wanted so the constant bait replacement etc was worth it to not have to even touch the Mackerel.

Don't understand that. The fish in my picture was caught on a frozen shrimp. that's all I use and have a freezer full of fish. What coast are y'all on.

I seem to do about as well on frozen shrimp as fresh. I buy fresh and freeze whatever is left over.

Can YouTube help me become a better fisherman? In this episode I am night fishing the Gulf State Park Pier in Gulf Shores Alabama. I start out shrimp fishing for croakers to use as cut bait. Then I manage to catch a hand full of white trout, as well as a giant croaker and a skate! I hope this video can help new saltwater fisherman hit the pier with a few tips to catch some fish. There is a bit of overlap in freshwater and saltwater techniques when you are just starting out. I am just happy I was able to catch so many fish in the gulf.

Shrimp the fresher the better and I also put a small piece of fishbites (bloodworm) on the hook as well, that way if the nibbles get the shrimp off the fishbites stays on for several bites. It's really tough to get off. Sometimes that's all I bait with. Works really good for sea mullet (whiting).

Not sure if "BaitButtons" are available nationwide, but here in the PNW they certainly help keep the bait where you want it on the hook. Check them out. Little rubber washers with a dispenser, in a couple of sizes.
