So my new dog partner has decided, after seeing me put a live shrimp on the hook, to bark and bite my poles. She was fine with me fishing up until this point. (dead shrimp) I introduced her to a live shrimp and now it's on. I know I need some basic training with her and am working on that daily. To most at the bay it was humorously entertaining, but I don't want or need a barking pup while flounder fishing or any other fishing! Consistent "NO" and distracting hasn't proven itself yet. Even a "tap" on the snoot with the "NO" hasn't hailed any results but to stop the immediate "game" she's playing. I'm hoping she'll get bored with it and just accept the way it is? Not counting on it tho... just need advice on proper correcting. If anyone has had this type of experience, or knows dog behavior, my ears/eyes are open! Thanks in advance!

Wife bought one and used it on our dog. They are not that cheap though.

Will look into this. Thanks!

If she on her leash put it under your foot so when she try’s to jump up she can’t ,leave it a little loose so she can try but finds out she can’t and when she goes back down to sitting give her the praise let her move a couple inches that way she can’t get all of her muscle power into her hind legs .

They have training collars that are inexpensive and work great. Had trouble with my lab and 1 or 2 touches they figure out who boss. Mine is round yellow transmitter and I very seldom even use the vibration feature See sees the transmitter In my hand or hanging around my neck and there are no problems. When she barks say no and use vibration. Next time she barks I use same command and shock again. use same command when ever you shock, vibrate or do nothing but using the command. Gun Dog People excellent to work with!

Pam,
When you get a dog that looks like maybe a year old from the picture, it has learned other traits, some good, some maybe not so good. So you are trying to "change" the dog as opposed to a new pup that you are raising and training from the beginning. The first thing you need to do is get CONTROL of the animal. He needs to know how to act on a leash. He needs to know the basics; his name, sit, stay, come, heel on a leash. If you have not trained a dog, I would recommend contacting your local vet to see if there is any body conducting training sessions.

Just speaking from experience over many years with different breeds and Heinz 57 models. Good luck.

How about getting a fish or shrimp plastic or rubber toy to hang on too while fishing. Maybe put a string or small rope to put it around his neck. We had a border collie we took on our bass boat. When I would catch a bass we show it to him and through it back in and he wanted to go in after it. We bought him (Cowboy) a toy duck to hold on too. Cowboy has passed on but we still have his duck. I had a large Beckwith golden retriever that fished with me in Puget Sound that would get very excited when we would have Orcas come near the boat usually when trolling for salmon.
One fall a young Beluga was separated from his pod and followed the silvers all the way to the south Sound. For some reason he would just followed my boat, never understood it.
Tony the big dog really wanted to be in there with it , well one day Tony fell in and they touched noses and it went well, with my yelling and screaming at Tony.
It went well but I had a hell of a time getting him back in to the boat. 90 lbs of long haired watery mess .
The Beluga stayed in the Tacoma area through most of November.
The game department who I was acquainted with said that he made it back out to the ocean in a week.

The one thing I always trained my dogs to do is listen, and watch hand signals. When they bark, say NO, then put your hand over there mouth. If you want them to sit, say SIT, then point to the floor. etc Never had to use a bottle or collar, but remember a dog will try to train you. Be consistent and give them praise when they do something right.

Thank you. I'm doing strictly voice and hands right now. In the future, if needed, we'll try the other methods. Seems to be gaining trust each day that passes... small consistent improvements. Walking is a breeze. Haven't been back fishing due to the weather, but today site looks promising!

Pretty the same for me, l trained Britts and Labs over the years, the main thing is you have to start young and stay with it
My sister in law had a great pointer that was pretty much a house dog, trained pretty well but whenever someone would walk on the sidewalk he would bark for 5 to 10 minutes.
I lent a shock collar, put it on next to low and the problem was solved.
My Britt's usually figured it out in the first week but as you know it wasn't for barking 🙂
