Just make sure you buy a fishing license and abide by all the DNR rules and regulations. You can find them in pamphlets at any sporting goods shop or online. Good luck!

You may be interested in Trout Unlimited. Make sure if you fish that you do get a license and follow all local regs.

Second this... if you cut your line or have a rats nest... put it in your pocket and not the ground

When I fish in a smaller lake with sometimes smaller fish I use barbless hooks (or pinch down the barbs) so releasing a small fish is less of a harm for the fish.

Catch and release is most sustainable when fish are handled properly.

Regulations should be your guide to sustainable fishing when harvesting. Obviously a small local pond can be cleaned out following regulations, so some common sense should be applied.

Getting into fishing can be a big help for the environment. Outdoorsman are a leading force in conservation. Do it! Have fun but be careful, its addictive...

Watch a bunch of videos on how to properly handle the fish you are targeting. Invest in the proper gear. Practice CPR whenever possible, and if you do want to keep some, don't keep the big ones, keep the mid sized. Don't leave like or trash behind. Read and follow the regs.

You read and follow the fishing regulations that pertain to the body of water you’re fishing on.

Find and contact your local state fisheries biologist and ask them what you asked here. They’ll be able to give you the best practices for your area and maybe some tips to get started.

As others have said, take your line out with you and dispose of it properly.

Take your trash with you , and if you find trash while there take it too. Some people just aren't as considerate as others.

Leave the fishing area in better condition than when you got there. Clean up other peoples trash as well as your on.
