When I take them fishing I have them in the container I purchased them in, then in a cooler sitting on top of a plastic frozen ice pack. My boat does get dirty from the bedding when I put them on a hook, but easily cleaned afterwards. Never tried rinsing them off or storing them in water…
Are you for REAL ? If you are, you're not comin on my boat. I suppose you don't wanna handle any of the fish you catch either, they're slimy and messy. Maybe you need a different sport/activity. Just sayin.
I agree with Butch, above. The worm “bedding” that I’ve used from BPS, Cabela’s, and Wal-mart has “worm food” in it and will keep them alive and healthy for many months if kept moist and cool. Great for worm farms… 👍
👍Randy I used it n keep worms alive for a long time
This stuff is great. Walmart or Cabelas. It’s sma light color grey. No stains no black dirt and it has worm food in it. Keeps your works smiling all day long. 😀

I was wondering if anyone wanted to share any tips on using crawlers without making a mess. If I took them out of the soil rinsed them and put them in a container with water would they last, and would I want to put ice in with them or just keep them cold.
You can buy commercial worm bedding or supposed food. Earth Worms eat leaves and wood naturally paper is basically wood. Corn meal is a great thing to add coffee grounds ( not too much ) are great cheap or free additives to shredded paper. Earth Worms ( night crawlers ) require temperature control.
Red wrigglers do NOT die in hot conditions. Both can be farmed for fishing and garden composting.
Worm Dirt and Fish slime is part of what fishermen and Fisherladies have dealt with for eternity.

I have seen the look on some people’s face when they look under the hood of a truck or car. I agree SAW1.

Saw1; interesting comment, the Woodsman in me can certainly relate to your comment. The Mental Health Instructor in me would like to mention that Tom just asked a simple question and is perhaps new to the sport? He may be trying to get his woman or kids involved? I think it's important on this stage to welcome questions without judgement and promote people getting involved in the sport no matter their previous exposure to the outdoors. As a kid I use to see an older woman quite often in early trout season and she kept a box of tissues with her to bait her hooks. But at least she was out engaged in fishing and funny thing was , she worked in the bakery with my Mom. My apologies to you Saw1 if you at any point I'm being disrespectful toward you . I value your comments very much and appreciate the great outdoors as well. 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🇺🇲🇺🇲

I took it as the mess from the bedding on the boat. I know it shows up big time on my white fiberglass wellcraft, but doesn't bother me 🤪
Butch and jepolt, it never occurred to me that there might be a way to avoid the mess. I have an old bandanna hanging off my tackle bag that I use to wipe my hands…or not, depending on how much of a hurry I’m in to cast out again. DVtracker, I’m that person with worm containers in my regular fridge. Thank goodness they’re clearly marked. Lol

Andy, a very valid point you make here. I shouldn't have been so quick to comment with my previous post. Apologies to Tom W.
This is Tom and I don't have any problem getting dirty hands. I think you misunderstood my message. I have rugs in my Skeeter and they get really ugly. with dirt and the rug could turn into a filthy mess. Most boaters I see have very clean boats to "START" the day
My dad used to freeze catalpa worms in milk boxes. We also used milk boxes/cartons to freeze many other things. One day my sister went to get huckleberries from the freezer. She came in with a carton of catalpa worms. No she did not make muffins with the catalpa worms. It seems the catipillers little round heads were dark and they floated with the head up so they looked a lot like huckleberries. Just saying we kept fish bait in the same freezer as our other food and at least once was picked up as food.
