I just wanted to tell the group a little about myself. I'm 50 yo and just starting to really learn how to fish. I've been in alot of trouble since my teen years and struggled w addiction ,and im n out of prison..for over 30 years. Opiates from surgeries and every other drug under the sun. I'm 4.5 years clean and getting ready to go back to work (in a rehab)after being on disability after a coma from an od. My Dad ,God rest his soul loved to fish and I never was able to go w him so we never got to bond in that way. I'm learning to bass ,crappie, and trout fish. He left me his tackle box and his fishing hat and I wear it when I do get the chance. I caught my first bass on a spinner last week
I'm learning everything right now..spinners ,crank baits,I don't really know what works for what and where so any and all advice will he appreciated! Ho0e to be able to show you what I catch in the future..ty and Fish on my friends

Nice bass Dana, welcome aboard here. There are lots of good people here who are happy to help you out. You can also watch YouTube videos on different technics, like using plastics (worms and jigs), crankbaits, dropshot, Ned rig, wacky rigs etc. And that's bass fishing 🎣. There's also crappie, perch, walleye, catfish that have different technics
Fish on 🎣🐟 and don't get disappointed, be patient.....since it is called fishing and not catching lol. Communing with nature is therapeutic, catching fish 🐟 is an exciting plus

That’s a good looking bass, Dana!
Congrats on your beating the addiction and staying clean this long! You are a great example to others who may be struggling with an addiction. Great testimony! 👍🙏🏻

Nice bass. Concrats on your sobriety. That’s your biggest accomplishment yet. There is tons of info on the Net and great how to videos on uTube. Don’t get carried away with buying tons of lures. The key is depth control and speed control. Light and bright colors for bright days and dark and chartreuse colors for off color water and cloudy days. Get a small variety of lures, plastic worms and 3-4” swimbaits, Tou will over time find your confidence baits. Have fun. I’d say join a club but they do a little too much partiying. For you.

Great story, it’s never too late to learn something new. My first advice would be to get some soft plastic worms, they are inexpensive and work in many scenarios for bass. Most diverse lure IMO. Best of luck!

Welcome to the Stage Dana, and congrats on your sobriety. I would definitely agree with JD, that plastic worms would be the first lure to try on Bass, especially in warmer water. Look on U tube for videos about Texas Rigged Worms. They're cheap and easy to fish. Good Luck and keep the pictures coming.

Dana488. Welcome aboard. Great job on your sobriety. I understand some of your struggles because I work with guys coming out of prison and provide them with housing opportunities and life skills. I have introduced a lot of them to fishing in NW Pa. I also work with the homeless and people recovering from substance abuse through NAMI ( National Alliance on Mental Illness). I believe that you can't change your past but you sure can write your future and it sounds like you are doing just that. Good job my man. I'll reinforce the guy's recommending plastics, from Texas rigs to Whacky worms I think this will be a good start. All the guys on this stage really have a vast amount of knowledge and will willingly share advice. For some top water fun and action maybe look into some poppers or a Zara Spook. The Bass hitting that will keep ya coming back for more. 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🇺🇲🇺🇲

Congratulations on your recovery. There is advice all over this site and around the internet, but there is only one way get experience. Talk to local fishermen, pay attention to the weather, and go out there and fish. Remember, what works today may not work tomorrow. Just keep experimenting.

Catching is not the reward; the whole experience of being out there - in the outdoors - is the payoff.

Good luck!

Welcome, Dana. I'm 79 and started fishing at four. That's 75 years and, brother, I'm still learning. Every one knows something that I don't. Just listen and you'll learn. And as far as your addiction and your time in, well, there's none of us who are squeaky clean. We all have something in the closet. You being in Ohio and the rest of scattered all over, we can't physically reach out to you. But, I promise that if you only ask, there will be a thousand thousand prayer offered up in you name. And prayer works!

I think you'll find fishing very therapeutic, without the feeling of being in therapy. It's quite remarkable. Welcome!

Dana - welcome to the forum and to a great pastime! Like others that have commented, I wish you continued success with your recovery. You will enjoy fishing - I say that based on nearly seventy years of fishing. Ask around and you’ll find people more than happy to help you and share their knowledge and experience with you. Fishing may try your patience at times, but it can provide you with some of the most relaxing and peaceful outdoor experiences.

My wife gave me a t-shirt for Father’s Day many years ago that says “There’s more to fishing than the fish”. Very true. There’s the time outside enjoying nature, watching wildlife, spending time with friends, even sorting through your tackle in anticipation of getting on the water early the next morning. Oh , and there’s the fish!

Tight lines!
