Hey guys. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you TOTALLY submerge a battery under water, doesn't that ruin it?
The water would connect both poles and That's NOT good. Right?

I was curious too Saw, from what I read if a lithium battery is submerged in water the reaction would be volatile. But I try not to sink any of my batteries!😁👍🏻🎣

Riverbottom, although I don’t have a kayak, I do run Lithium batteries in my boat. 2 12V 100 Amp/hour for my 24V trolling motor.. and 1 12V 50amp/hr battery for all my accessories. I took all load off my starting battery, which is still a lead acid battery. I have a Mercury Outboard, and as of yet they have not endorsed lithium use as a starting battery… issues with the alternator.. it cannot handle being shut off when a lithium battery’s Battery Management System stops taking a charge when battery reaches full charge.
They are pricey, but I won’t go back to lead acid… weight savings, less space required, can be mounted in any position. I have a dual 5 amp lithium capable charger for my trolling motor batteries, and it does just fine.
I do not charge my batteries after every trip out. According to the company, Ionic, I don’t have to. They said it is good to draw them down once in awhile, just not lower than 20% charge. I use my electric motor hard, and even troll with it, and I have not gotten below 70% after a day on the water, and have several times went out again the next day, and fished hard, getting down into the 35-40% range with no issues at all.
If you can afford to, I recommend Lithium. Check out Lithium Hub, and their Ionic brand.. all dealings with them have been great, from my repeated questions and concerns, ordering and shipping a breeze.
An added plus is they have a Bluetooth app and you can see the state and condition of batteries at all times.. if you have a smart phone that is!
There are a lot of different Lithium Battery ‘make ups’….so do your research and become a little more knowledgeable!

Very good information about another reliable lithium brand. Thank you for adding your "actual use" related comments as well!

The danger with a lithium battery is that when water and lithium combine it starts a chemical reaction that produces lots of hydrogen. Hydrogen is incredibly flammable, so Amy spark from the battery will start the battery burning.

Pending the answer Steve, I am curious when you see a car submerged with head lights on, they stay lit for some time.

Well, that's true. I just don't know how it might affect the battery to submerge it.

Based on what was mentioned thus far in this thread, and what brands were specifically mentioned, I would certainly consider the Ionic unit that Outcast mentioned. He has had a few years of solid "good results" so far and I might add that after visiting their web site myself today, I think they would be a good bet.

I forgot to see what they charged for shipping, but the 100 amp hour battery price seems to be in line with comparable alternate brands that might be available right off the shelf with in store shopping.

Although lithium technology has been around for a long time (over 30 years), it seems to me that the past decade has seen the most successful improvements for applications of large batteries for various uses such as "marine" scenarios. As with any new "potentially highly profitable" business these days, there will be a lot of brands that rise and fall while trying to get a solid foothold on the market. In the somewhat distant future, when this technology is more fully matured, we might all look back and laugh at the current pricing regimes. By then we'll also probably be faced with even better means of powering stuff that floats!

That being said, if you want to enjoy the technology right now, then the "piper must be paid" in current monetary demands....

PS. I happen to have settled on the Amped Outdoors brand. I have seen their products available for several years, and the Michigan sporting goods store (Jay's Sporting Goods of Clare and Gaylord, MI) where I recently purchased a motorized kayak from had a nice selection of them on hand. No "price break" on them, so I shelled out the $700 without flinching for a 100 amp hour model. A charger was another $50.00.

I have three years use on two Amped Outdoors 60 amp lithiums. I have one on each of my two kayaks and have never run out of battery in a days fishing. I take the two baterries and run them in series to run my 24 volt Terrova on my aluminum boat. I can troll all day with no fear of running out of juice. Also the folks at Amped are great to respond to any questions when I call. I recently bought their battery monitor so I can see just how much battery I am using and how much I have left. I sometimes travel several miles when fishing the bayou and was nervous about running out of power in the back country. Cost is an issue, but the reliability and longevity give me great confidence when going on the water.

I have have great experience with Millertech lithium.
My new Excell Elite 230 will be equipped with 2 36 volt for the Garmin Kraken TM and 1 12 volt dedicated to 4 - 126sv garmin chartplotters and live scope

Mercury has now come out with a letter stating that lithium batteries are approved for use with their motors.
The concern was the electric output from the motor to the battery exceeded the max. Allowed by the smart batteries and would cause the battery to shut down

Not sure about Yamaha motors but know that Honda and Suzuki do not want lithium batteries due to the amp out out of their motor.

Millertech is running special on their battery packages now to include their onboard chargers and batteries.

Millertech also has the phone app that u can monitor the charge status of the batteries

I received the Millertech recommendation from Garmin support when I ordered the chartplotters and researched them.
Also got an additional discount when I called them to discuss their batteries.
