Hi fellow SF bay anglers. I'm thinking about purchasing either a Sea Doo or motorized kayak to get around the bay efficiently. By efficiently i mean it would be nice to hit 5-6 spots between Angel Island and the Petaluma River in a morning's time. Completely new to watercraft ownership so please advise.

The section of water you are looking to traverse it’ll have to be a pretty nice day. I’ve fished that area quite a bit over the years and the conditions can change very quick. Haven’t really seen smaller boats or kayaks above the rock quarry. See them every once in awhile at Paradise. I’ve taken my pram out in front of the rod and gun club but that’s as far as I’d go. Just my 2 cents.

Man in a small boat (prob. aluminum with motor) was found in the Bay last winter, so it can be dangerous in moving tides, windy conditions, etc.. I would stay as close to shore as possible in good conditions like near Paradise in Tiburon or just outside Lock Lomond, where a kayaker got halibut in the spring. Ware a good life jacket and maybe teather yourself to kayak or small boat?

I agree TJ. The area you've mentioned can get very rough in no time at all.
OFTEN, you caould go out and the conditions would be PERFECT. But then an hour or so later the conditions could be "Small craft advisory" and you don't wanna be out there on those waters when it gets that way. Just Sayin.

Hmmm.......i'm clearly in over my head. Thank you saw1, Got Fish and Clouser Fly for the advice-from shore it always looks deceivingly calm. I'm now re-thinking the kayak in favor of the Sea Doo if i can afford it. If any of you would like to stop by the Marin Rod & Gun for some pier fishing and a stiff drink please be my guest.

Might take you up on that in a few weeks. I wouldn’t say you are over your head, you’re learning and it’s alway best to ask questions. I’ve learned a lot over the years about the bay and areas you want to fish. Just a suggestion but you might just want to save up for a boat. I’ve fished a lot of different boats on the bay. Keep your eye out and you’ll find something for a decent price that will get you safely out to fish and back in. What days do you visit the R&G club?

I'm only 10 minutes away so I'm there all the time, especially during events when I pull kitchen duty. Just let me know when you'll be in the neighborhood and I'll meet you there. I'm not an early riser but I think pier fishing is best in the mornings regardless of the tides. I've been after happy hour fish but so far no luck. I'll be traveling until 11/01 so let's connect after I return.

From angel island to Petaluma river you’ll be crossing waters that can get very sloppy quick. I’d recommend something that can handle what sf bay throws at you
