A couple of years ago, I was on the freeway and saw a sign for 'Fisherman's retreat', a place where Dad used to take us from time to time. I decided to stop to see what I could remember. I found the same tree at the waters' edge where Dad showed me how to fish for bluegill with a bobber and a worm. That opened the tap, and I was lost in memories for awhile.

Thanks, Dad!

Cool story. It's sometimes nice to get lost in the memories for awhile. Even the sad ones. You are able to see how much you've grown and moved on since then.

Posted in earlier thread.
Grandpa - Mom would need meat for the table. Grandpa would grab me and we'd go to the Yellow Britches for blue gill and perch.

Just curious and at what age? I remember being 4 year old and my dad taking me to a farm pond near the house. We had to make sure the cows and bulls weren't loose. Great fishing we caught a ton of bass out of that little pond.

Who got you into it?

My dad. I was probably 3-4 years old. We used to go to a mill pond. Had an old wooden row boat and steel rods with open face spinning reels. Great memories.

When I was 6 years old my grandfather (Poppy) would take me fishing for flounder at Jones Beach (Cabtree) on Long Island. He had a 1954 Ford (two tone green) and he had to stick the tips of the rods out of the front window. One time I broke the tip off of one of the rods when I closed the door. I'll never forget that (some 64 years later). He never said a harsh word, but I definitely saw the disappointment in his eyes. He passed when I was ten years old, but those are some of my most treasured memories.

So nice to read all the stories of how we got into fishing. Like many others, my Dad liked to fish too. When I was
around 6 years old we would go down to Mustang Creek near Taylor Texas. We used a cane pole, string, hook, and some worms I would find around the barn. Mostly what we caught were what he called "mud cats", because they would taste like dirt. Some one told him to soak the catfish in "clabber" from the milk. It really did help. From there we went to a little lake in Taylor to catch bluegill and an occasional bass. In my last move back to Texas, I lost my original fiberglass rod and Zebco reel. Kinda wanted to pass it on to the grandkids. Maybe it will show up.

Since then, my wife and I have fished in many western states. So nice to have a wife for a fishing partner.

Like most I was very young when I first started fishing….can’t really remember who exactly got me started…but then after getting back from the army I never really got back into it..I don’t why…lol. It wasn’t till I was in my early 50’s when my best friend of 50 years was dying of cancer and all he wanted to do was fish to the end…..….so fortunately I was able to retire early and for the next 4 months we went fishing almost every day…..the last few trips I had to pick him up and put him in the boat and the same to get him out …….I’ve been fishing as mush as possible since….I’m now 62……..love ya Tiny

Have no idea but think it was just me and a few friends, 8 or 9, it was a long learning curve.
