Hello all! I am looking to get a 10-11wt rod to use for anything from surf fishing for stripers or fishing big rivers for steelies or big browns. I want something that just good at casting in the wind and getting some distance. Wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions on set ups, im currently looking at Orvis’s clearwater line up and the spey rods seem fun and cool and just wanted thoughts if its a good buy or if there are any down sides.

10-11 wt is probably overkill. Those are for like 150+ lb tarpon. I think an 8-9wt is what you want and I haven’t seen many ppl through two handed rods on the beach. I have an 8wt and it gets a bunch of use. I think the only time I would use a 10-11wt is if I borrowed one from a guide down in the Keys.

I much prefer a two handed 11 foot over a single hand for the beach. I fish for a lot of striper.
It’s much lower effort and you can get a lot more distance. I have both but always find myself reaching for the two hander
Edit
I use a 7wt 9’6 single hand
6wt 11ft two hand
This is striper fishing and some surf perch

What kind of line would you recommend for east coast surf fishing? Is intermediate sinking good or does it really just depend

An 11wt rod would rip a brown trout's mouth off. I fish an 8 & 9wt for stripers in the surf, and 6&7wt long rod for GL steelies/lake run browns

I use a 9 foot 8wt casting rod made out of a fly blank and it will far out cast most others and it make catch stripers and Sturgen fun and in is great for down rigging for ocean Salmon.
This is such a good forum. You people are talking about some good thinking and deep experience. Keep talking!
40 years ago i wraped a 10wt fly rod blank into a fabulous smb spinning rod for wading rock ledges in the New river. It would really send 1/8 oz baits. I also use one wraped as a casting rod on my downrigger.
I’m not a 2 hand fan , however I use a 9’8# single hand with T 300 line or 11# weight head fast sink Type 4 !
Length of head usually 20-24’ ! Covers all but extreme situations , cast easily 80 100’ using water haul
