What part of California are you in?
Laguna Wood Rod & Gun Club membership is open for new members.
We are working on having and expert in surf fishing teach some of us non-surf qualified fisherman exactly how to do it. Are you nearby and are you interested??

I didn't mean to sound brash by my reply. I have spent many hours with out even a bite. I have spent many hours with lots of bites and no hook ups. I fish for most species in my region (WNC) but mostly fish for Catfish. One day they may take a particular bait and the next day won't touch it. I always have multiple baits on hand in hopes that one will attract a bite. I am also reading forums and watching videos on the particular species I might want to target, always trying to improve my chances..

Fishing is good sport in teaching patience. (Example) The other day I spent 12 hours in the same place on the bank of a lake. I had several bites during the day,but No hookups. The fish were just pecking at the bait but not *taking it* . I was keeping my bait fresh, resetting every 45 minutes..At 11 hours and 30 minutes I got a hit that fully loaded an 8' heavy action rod.. 5 minutes later I had a 29.5lb Blue Cat..

I try not to get frustrated over *dry spells* they happen! I, instead, enjoy the fresh air and peace..

I love ** Catching** but mostly I enjoy **Fishing** and the anticipation of ** Catching**

Rigging, bait, lures, technique, equipment, barometric pressure, temperature, moon phase, time of year, quality of the fisheries, etc. ALL play a part in success or failure.. PATIENCE and PERSISTENT!!

If you like to Fish and enjoy to Fish then Fish.Watch videos, read forums, take classes, hire guides, etc. If you only get enjoyment out of Catching, then *Quit* because as I said.."This sport/pass time is called *Fishing not Catching*

And, (kvothe) what smells, is my bait.*It smells really bad!!!!

TIGHT LINES!!

Ive been fishing for two years now and have only ever caught four total fish (two SM-bass and two smelt). I've been doing it by myself since I don't know anyone who fishes. Ive been to 4 lakes(even rented a boat) and I fish around the California central bay. I've tried fishing throughout the year and every season and can't seem to catch anything. I've tried talking to people at the pier and most are pretty introvert or act like they don't want to help a noobie. I have a bunch of lures, hooks, and a bunch of other stuff but none has been useful. Do you guys have any tips?

My own approach to fishing is to look up videos on YouTube for the subject of fishing. YouTube is the modern equivalent of the encyclopedia. It has certainly helped me. Be specific in your search on YouTube. You will do fine.

Even the most experienced fishermen get skunked sometimes. Just the way that it goes. My advice to you is to acquire as much first hand knowledge as possible in the areas that you’re fishing. Keep at it and I promise you the day will come that will make all of the bad days worth it.

If your fishing saltwater, get yourself a package of frozen squid. Let it thaw. Tie yourself a hook on a dropper loop about 12" above your sinker. Now slice pieces the squid on to the hook. Hook size #1, sinker 1= 1 1/2 oz. Now just start casting into all your favorite saltwater spots. You will discover that it's hard not to catch a fish

I think hiring a professional fishing guide for just one day would change your whole outlook. Try to find a highly rated individual.

Your welcome sir. Sometimes you just have to hit the mule between the eyes with a 2x4 and get his attention. Good luck👍

my advice Wanderer?
don't quit
hire a guide at your fav lake
he can tell you where to fish and what lure is presently catching fish
the cost of the guide will pay off in future fishing times

Try drinking while your line's in the water. You'll feel better even if you don't catch fish...

There are fisherman who might look down on you for using live bait, but 4 fish in 2 years and thinking about quitting says forget those guys and learn where the fish are and how to land them. Get a lousy bobber for $2 and some 1/0 hooks for $2. Then invest in a cast net and learn how to throw it. Invest in a floating bait bucket and a small dip net and start throwing the bait you have caught on site hooked through the lips or behind the top fin. Start floating those minnows around and you will catch something. Big fish eat little fish all the world around. You will catch something. Switch to lures after you figure it out.

Try fishing with live bait. You will catch fish. Go to bait shops to get the bait and ask the sales people where to fish. They will give you honest info because they want you coming back.
