Why not just use a bobber to keep it up? How deep are you fishing? Lake or moving water? Don't do much cat fishing now but there was a time. I used a bobber and a Shimano baitrunner reel.

If you use night crawlers put them on the hook hit them with a little air with an insulin syringe, small holes and they just wave at the fish/float. Helps keep them off of the bottom.

Slip sinker about a foot or so depending on what you know about the bottom where you are fishing.
