Hey Ed, I have used raw shrimp with a lure for almost everything here in brackish water and works great when you can keep it on a the hook. But last two years I use Pro Cure shrimp scents and on the Z man curly tails with a notch in the belly the scent last a lot longer.

The problem I've had with shrimp is it's too good. Everything in the water seems to love it and it doesn't last long enough to attract a catfish. I used to either wrap the chicken livers with magic thread or a piece of cheesecloth. But my go-to bait was always mackerel. Bloody, oily, smelly and it's tough enough to stay on the hook. Asian markets in my area sell em whole. Anchovies work well too, but you need that magic thread to keep em on.

My dad used to use those for bluegill and crappie. He would pinch their heads off and run a stick thru them to turn them inside out. Ever heard of that? It worked.

If you soak your shrimp in salt water they toughen up and stay on your circle hook. When I fish for catfish I start my day with putting 3 baits out....normally shrimp, chicken breast chunks and nightcrawlers. The fish let me know what they want to eat. After I catch two on the same bait, that what I put on all three rods. I'm in Wisconsin so 3 rods are legal.

Thank you, I think I will try soaking them before using them. I have tried night crawlers but the will catch the junk fish fast. Might try chicken breast also. There is no place that I know of to get mackerel around my area, so that's out. Thanks again guys for your input.

With reading this thread along with some others, I would try some deer hair homemade jigs with circle hooks soaked in blood or punch bait.
The deer hair should have some movement underwater/ it floats, not just lay on the bottom.
