I am fishing deep lakes in the North East Kingdom Vermont. I am using lead core line 36lb with a 6' 8lb. leader. The last hit broke the leader and when I looked it seemed frayed. I had caught a few fish with it. I am fishing for lake trout and using a streamer fly.
Are you using fluorocarbon leader? I'd go 20lb. Lake trout (which are not trout at all but char) are not particularly leader shy, and you're fishing deep so they probably can't see it anyway. So I would not use fluorocarbon, I would switch to regular mono. I like Maxima ultra green, but that's just me.
For Lake trout A K A dumber than dirt I WOULD use Fluro, 16 to 20, most impt. I would get rid of the LEAD core and use wire. Wire is hard to learn to use and you need some special gear. That said it OUTfishes lead 20 to 1
