Born in San Diego 75 years ago, fished lakes, and rivers when there were trout in them, I had a bass boat until 2003. When my friend who grew up in Point Loma took me out on south SD bay and we caught more fish than I ever caught in 6 hrs on the water. I went out Sat and caught 40 all Spotted Bay bass. My friend and his friend caught and released 116. 2 of us went out today and caught 86, Spotties, mackerel, Jack smelt 1 small Halibut. We've caught bonefish, bonito, Shortfin corvina, croaker. The largest halibut I got into the boat was 30" and had one up to the boat after he tried to swallow a 8" spottie but let go while I was trying to get my net. I don't eat anything out of the bay but love to catch and release. Best day in 8 years for 2 of us was 176 a lot of disks but some 16"s and 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 lbs . Have hooked into some very large Bat Rays that took 1/2 hr pulling my 15' boat around. Even on weekends not much fishing pressure. Today only 1 other fisherman on the water 1/4 mile from us. Nothing great but a lot of fun. Better than staying home and doing yard work.

Mr. Fishandrods, you said it. I've fished all up and down the So. Cal coast since a kid with my pops back in 70s...still do with my eldest boy (Navy 12 yrs. and going. i will agree plenty of fish to target, but then you never know what your hooking...plenty of surprises.

I forgot something in my long winded response that I only fish plastics. In the past we used Big Hammer swim baits city shrimp color 3" on 3/8 oz jighead. The last 2 years the best is Kalins lunker grub Rons craw and blue pearl salt and pepper colors 3", 4" and 5" with 3/8 and 1/4 oz heads. I'm done, haven't pecked on letters this much since 9th grade typing.

Good morning BF, I failed to mention we only fish in 18' or less water, stay out of the deeper channel. There are areas of clam beds that are the best. We stay south of the Coronado bridge, one is by the white mercy ship the other by the 34 bouy which are on the east side of bay, you can catch everywhere but those are best. We never anchor just drift with a drift schute if there is any wind which usually happens, incoming tide is best.

Thanks buddy! I was thinking about float tubing Dana Point harbor if aloud. My buddy just bought a home there and said he’s seen a ton of bay bass, sand bass, and calicos. I’ll be fishing Diamond Valley Lake next Wednesday. I’ve been catching a lot of largemouth bass there last few times out... mostly dinks! Gonna up size my lures and go for bigger bass. πŸ„πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸŽ£

BF I surfed Dana Point in the early 60s on 9' and 10' Hobie boards before the harbor was there spent the night in friends Woody wagons. I buy my Kalins lunker grubs over the phone at Tackle Warehouse. Call them in morning and have them the next day. Free shipping for $50 or more. Good luck!!!

Took my 9’8” log out there few weeks ago.., chest hi and fun... only a few people out believe it or not! Ya, I think I have a Tackle Warehouse issue... being mostly a bass guy, I tend to spend at least $150 a month. Funny, I spend around $ 100 a year on surf fishing tackle! Different deal all together! I’m looking forward to tubing some So Cal harbors soon. Just waiting for my buddy to get his new house in order and it’s on! AM surf, afternoon fish, evening bbq, margaritas, jacuzzi... repeat πŸ€™πŸ„πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸŽ£
