I'm a meat fisherman that prefers a 9" Fly Rod and poppers.

The last time I walked on Ice to fish was the very day Joe Namath won Super Bowl III. Read here, IT REALLY AIN'T MY CUP OF TEA. I gave away all my gear in the fall of 2014, because my wife and I were moving south and into a retirement community to be close to our only Kid, her Husband and their only Daughter. (a fist fight I wisely chose to not fight) Had to blow that pop stand retirement thing after ah year 'cuz people kept dying in there and we found it to be very depressing. Fast forward 3 more years and I'm now in the process of replacing all my spinning and Fly fishing gear. Do you guys know how hard it is to locate a Garcia-Mitchell 401 RH CRANK REAL 'cuz it hasn't been made since '84? A bit of Background. Spend most of my adult life between Wisconsin and Michigan rivers and Lakes in those two states and I like the fresh water there.(just me, nothing wrong with many more states 'n places) Most of my fly fishing has been done with DT line I guess because I'm ah tight wad and I can extend the life of the line by just reversing it on the real when it start to sink. At this juncture in time My question to others in this part of the hobby is simple. I'm switching to WF line just to see how I like it, HOW DOES IT COME ON THE SPOOL? Do I transfer it straight onto my real from the shipping spool, or spread it all over my living room floor after completely removing it from the shipping spool to get at the other end? It's not keeping me up nites, BUT? I'm in the planing stages of going north in June and try to catch 'um while they're still on the beds, and again in mid August when i have fun enticing them up out of 15'-20' of water. Jer

Well sir, my opinion is you ain't gonna catch a damned thing on a 9 inch fly rod. That said, the WF line should come to you with the butt end ready to be attached to your backing. SHOULD. And if you buy a respectable brand it most likely will. Stay away from that bargain stuff, it is not. A bargain.

I also believe it comes ready to spoil. If in doubt, unspool 6 or 10 feet of line and you should be into the heavier belly of the line of spoiled the other way. If that IS the case (I think not) you will need to clean up the living room.

It comes ready to spool so when you wind it on the WF end will be at the beginning.
Have your wife put a pencil through the spool and hold with a little tension as you wind it onto your fly reel.
Do you have backing on your fly reel?20 or 30lb. backing is what is normally used.
The backing should go on first, then the fly line on top of the backing.

Thank ya'll. 'Preciate your input and You've answered my question. Fishing mostly for Deep Water Roachs 1/2 lb or bigger on the fly rod, I never saw the need for backup line? If I accidentally get into a mess of Crappy's after ripping the lips off ah few, I'll move on. Same for the occasional Bass? Drag 'um in and set 'um free, Jer
