How do I stop my reel from unravelling?

Super n00b here.

I’m afraid once I tie my rig on I’m gonna have metres and metres of line which will come loose. It keeps unravelling.

Am I supposed to lock it somehow?

I'm also a noob so this might not be the right way, but I've had success just turning the drag way up so you can pull on the line and it doesn't unravel. Also, I make sure to pull out enough line so I can lay my rod down and not have to fuss with it while I'm trying my knots. Again, I'm no pro, I just figured I'd throw my 2 cents in since I didn't see any other replies

Ninja edit: you shouldn't have to turn it up a crazy amount, just enough to keep it from coming out while you're thing your knots.

Thanks for your help kind friend. I think you mean the twisty thing that apparently adjusts tension?

Yeah that's the technical name for it lol. It's in different spots depending on what reel you have, but yeah thats what I'm referring to. YouTube will probably have a video on adjusting the drag if you're not sure

Attach your reel to your rod.

Adjust your drag to the point where it is loose enough for you to pull out without much effort, then thread it through your rod guides.

Tie your rig on.

Go fishing.

I think the reel already came attached

So I think I’ve done everything correctly?

I’m afraid once I tie my rig on I’m gonna have metres and metres of line which will come loose?

Thanks for the photo :)

No worries we all start somewhere.

If make sure your bail is closed when you're pulling your drag out. If it's open your line will unravel like a spring

Not sure how true this is, but my cousin suggested that you dip your fresh line on the line reel only into luke warm water to get the line to relax to its new shape. After my newest setup, I’ve lost 60% of my line on my open face reel. That’s when this was suggested to me. Couldn’t believe my mono filament looked like braided after some casts. I’ll be following this thread.

Anti reverse switch on the bottom or back of the reel will stop the reel spinning in an outwards direction.

If the line is mono sometimes you can if you have the room open your bail walk off 40 yards of line and stretch it. wind it back in through the grass and try to take the twist out of it. This will help to keep it from jumping off the spool when you open the bail. Or maybe their is just to much line on the spool.
