Are used to be an avid fisherman but I became handicapped and I haven’t fished in quite a while. I live in the northern Illinois area and I wonder if anyone has any idea how a handicap person can start fishing again. I wouldn’t plan to do it until the spring

Hey HC, welcome to the forum and glad to read that you are not letting the handicap keep you from doing what you enjoy. Could you narrow down your location a little so those in your area could help you out a little better? Is a boat a possibility or are you looking for a pier or land access?

I used to coach football who was in a wheelchair for over 10 years and he was truly amazing. I’m sure that you are the same since you want to continue to fish. First I would contact your State’s boat and fish commission to see where there are accessible facilities. Second and just as important, I would put an add in the local paper to find yourself a fisherman friend who might help you access a boat kayak etc. if you so desire. Most fisherman are super good guys and I have no doubt you will make many new friends who are willing to help you. Good luck my friend, you’ll be fine! Wish I lived close enough, your problem would already be solved, but I’m from central PA.

1st welcome to the forum. How badly are you handicapped? There are a lot of areas set up at most public waters for those of us with disability. Are you able to go by yourself or do you need assistance? Read, watch you tube and research the waters in your area. For me that is as big a part of fishing as the rest.
