Beginner - 10ft pole too long?

Hi all,

Total beginner here. I’ll be fishing for snapper, kingfish and flathead (and whatever else I can catch really) in the Sydney, Australia region.

I picked up what seemed like a good deal for a 10ft pole, some scented baits, sinkers and a floater, but now that I have it all at home, the pole feels so... long?

Am I in over my head and should I exchange for an 8ft pole, or does the extra length give me some benefits?

It all really depends on where and how you are fishing. On a basic level, if you want to cast a longer distance you'll want a longer rod. On top of that, matching the weight of what your casting to the stiffness of the rod will help a lot too.

10' is the length of rod you'd look at for beach fishing to get the bait out as far as possible to put it in a gutter without having to walk in chest deep to cast. If you are looking at fishing from a boat over the top of a reef, a shorter rod is good because you only really need to drop the bait down rather than cast it out. If you are fishing at sand flats, a light and flexible rod is good because you can flick light lures and then control how they move through the water.

For basic fishing, any rod is going to get a hook in the vicinity of fish so you can catch fish. If you are fishing from a jetty or pontoon with bait it's not really a big deal because you don't need to be super accurate and get your hook into a very specific area and it can just sit there until a fish smells it and comes along.

The scented baits are soft plastic lures, and you don't use them as 'bait' as much as a moving lure that also has a scent. Rather than putting them with a sinker or float they are used with a weighted jig head.

Where in Sydney are you fishing? You'll struggle to find decent sized snapper from the shore, but flathead hang out in shallow water so you'll find them pretty much everywhere.

It’ll be a combination of beach, jetty and shore probably. Just looking for some fun summer times with a mate and a couple of beers. Hope to get the odd BBQ dinner out of it as well.

The baits are pre rigged, so I’ll just need to attach them to a line.

10ft is fine for what/where you will be fishing. Get your “C” out and go catch some fish mate!!! 🏄🏼‍♂️🎣
