Hello I have been reading this forum for a couple weeks trying to get tips and such but i figured i would just see if i could get some help out there that is directly related to me .i am single mother who loves to go fishing but i dont have a clue about what i am doing i have had lots of nice suggestions and followed through and still have not been able to catch a single fish. I am trying to teach my sons and they are getting bored with it nothing works the only place we can go fishing is on the piers because we dont have a fishing license .(cant afford one for all of us ) so if any one out there has any tips as to what kind of bait how to properly rig my pole and maybe the times to go fishing , i am willing to try any and everything to catch a fish for my boys thank you . Oh we are on the central coast if that makes a difference. Thanks again

Hello I have been reading this forum for a couple ... (show quote)

Where are you? Depending on the boys age they won't need a license. When you go to the pier, ask the people behind the counter for advice. Start with the small stuff because they are easier to catch and work up from there. Good luck, tight lines. Mike

Most fishermen [and women] are willing to share info and technique. Of course, one cannot be taught everything that plain ol’ experience brings...so...i recommend you simply ask and observe what others are doing in the area you are fishing. I’ll bet some old salty gentleman would be glad to help you and the boys get rigged out and baited up. There’s lots of YouTube videos that could be informative, too. Plus i would imagine could keep your sons more involved and interested in the process. As others here stated, stick with the basics till you get more of the hang of it, then broaden your scope and depth of learning.

Have your kids watch the videos on YouTube too! Get them involved in the every way! I started when my boy was 4 now he is 16 and we still bass fish every Saturday! Star small and work up! 1 oz weight on bottom and about 12 inches up put a #2 circle hook and some shrimp on and you should do fine. Remember the spots you saw others catch fish and were the tide was and try to repeat it! Observe what others are doing and ask for help! Trust me there is someone fish around that would help!

Welcome Sabriae from Alabama Bill. What about some of your neighbors where you live. Like the others have said ask people that are fishing around you for help. If you want to learn you need to learn from someone that is out there catching. 99 out of 100 will be glad to help. Be open and ask for help.

I use raw shrip from Walmart and make 3-4 tuperware contaners, but with you and the boys, make 2 out of the bag. Put one in the freezer and the other add water to help thaw it out. For smaller fish, just use a piece small enough to cover the hook. You don't really need Bloodworms in the ocean. Gulp does have fake blood worms for about $6 a bag at my Walmart, (Maryland). They also work and do not need refrigeration. Not quite as good as the real ones, but lots cheaper and they don't die and rot on you. I catch Spot and White perch with them and use the Spot for cut bait for Strikers, Blues, and Catfish in the Chesapeake Bay. Most fishermen will be glad to help you and your boys. Check at 9 and 11 they may not need a license if you have one. Most Piers that charge also don't charge you for your children. Usally they start at 12 years old, but I don't know about Cali.

No sure about Ca but in Va they wouldn't need a license until they are 16. Good luck. Mike

You can look up your Fish and Game Commission on line. That will give you all of the info you'll need on the license thing and everything else you need to know.

Circle hooks are great as they usually always hook the fish in the corner of the mouth but you'll need pliers to remove it from the mouth. Also with circle hooks you don't want to "set the hook", you let the fish hook it's self. I would start with smallish long shanked J hooks. They are much easier to handle. You'll still want to have needle nose pliers. Go get em gal. Mike

Thing is they might not need a license but if you touch the pole at all you might.

In California, once you turn 16, you need a fishing license. I agree with all of these gentlemen, never be afraid to ask. Most fisherman that see you and your kids not catching, after a short friendly discussion would let first you youngest reel one in, then your oldest, then even you if you started the discussion the very same way you did here on the blog. If someone is fishing to feed themselves, it could be different but someone fishing for sport and practicing catch and release much like I do normally, would be more than glad to assist. You should be able to tell within moments of any conversation with a fisherman wether they’d like to help or not. Just ask.

That is true in Virginia though she can take the fish off of the hook and can bait the hook but cannot cast or reel for them. I don't know about Ca. though. Mike
