Is there a real distinction to be made as to what constitutes a baitcast reel and what constitutes a conventional reel? I was always under the belief that they were two distinct things but I have been trying to figure out what the difference is and the answers I have found have only made me more confused. Are they one and the same or is there some consistent detail to point to as to what the formal difference between them is? Thanks for your input!

Don't use a baitcaster near iron sands.

Size, mostly. But even that isn't set in stone. Generally, conventional refers to heavier tackle. The basic architecture and funtion between the two are the same.

Somebody help this old man! What are iron sands? I've been to 3 county fairs & a cock fight but never heard of iron sands. We have lots of quicksand in oklahoma.
All bait cast reels are conventional reels. Not all conventional reels are bait cast reels. The spool rotates on all conventional reels versus spinning reels where the spool is stationary and the line is wrapped around it.
