I need some tips or something.

So, all my life I’ve basically fished small ponds and I do pretty good. About 2-3 times a week I’ll go to a little pond by my house, fish from the shore, and usually catch 3-5 fish in a couple hours. Now I recently got my first boat and am fishing in big lakes (vs ponds) and I am doing absolutely dismal. If I bring buddies with me, they do great, catching a few fish every time, while I catch nothing.

Is there any tips or tricks that should be different with lake fishing from a boat vs pond fishing? I cannot figure it out and it’s happened enough times now to where I think it’s gotta be something I’m doing wrong.

Start with finding the fish. Where are they and why? Are they on wood? Grass? Docks? Points? Mouths of ditches? Then of the most important things is casting. Accuracy and entrance. You can't pick pockets slamming a whopper plopper in there. Don't be afraid to take a step back, slow down and analyze. Pay close attention to the bites you get or see and try to develope a pattern.

Generally, finding bass is harder in a larger body of water then in a smaller one. I fish a ton of small ponds from the bank and also struggle to find them when I take my yak to larger waters. Without electronics I rely on topo maps to find what offshore structure I can. I also still spend a lot of time beating up shoreline cover.

Just remember, anytime you’re fishing bigger/natural lakes compared to ponds, slow down your presentation and use more natural colors. Also, on bigger lakes they’ve usually been fished by more people and more people with a large variety of lures, baits, and presentations. Try to match their natural forage to start then dial in on what gets them going crazy there. What part of us you in?

Takes a while dude.

Genuinely took me 11 months to adjust to fishing big lakes. Realize you have so much more going on now, trolling motor, boat positioning, boat safety, access to deeper water, stability etc. Your brain isn't able to purely focus on fishing until you really get comfortable at fishing from a boat.

The best tip I can give you is to just try and focus on one body of water for a while, learn how the fish migrate and adjust to weather/seasons in your specific climate. Then you can apply that to other lakes in your area.

I fish bass. walleye. Trout. Pan fish. Pike. I use an arsenal of lures but when I cant beg a strike I switch to a beetle spin. White 3 or 4 inch beetle for larger fish and 2 inch beetle for pan fish. They resemble minnows and almost every species will hit them. Casting or growling inland lakes and rivers they work great. Good luck. 👍
