Me and some buddies are planning to make a trip to Venice next year and spend 2-3 days fishing for redfish. We have a capable boat, equipment, and a rough idea of where we are going. We would like to launch from Venice Marina, and fish that wagon wheel area near there. After looking at some maps online, it looks like this is private waters? Should we focus in on other area's instead of the wagon wheel?

2-3 days is not enough time to really figure that area out. You'd be better off fishing with a guide.

I hear ya. We are dead set on the whole DIY aspect. We may have to burn 1-2 trips to learn the place.

You also need to make sure you have a good radio and a buddy. Getting stuck in the marsh is not a fun way to spend the weekend. I’ve done it. Those little waterways move all the time and you can’t trust the map. If you are not using a surface drive stay in the big water until you figure it out.

Go out to the jetty’s and fish close to shore on the outside of the jetty’s. You will catch red fish sheepshead, black drum, Atlantic spadefish, hardhead cats, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, speckled trout, cobia and an occasional shark. Jig and shrimp work good also spoons and spinners and plugs. Took three of my grandsons there a couple years ago and we had steady action. Best place I have ever fished. You can also go out to any of the nearer oil rigs and do really well.
