Hey guys, I’m looking for a good fly rod to take on backpacking trips. Preferably something around 5-6’ that breaks down small enough to fit in a pack. I’ll mostly use it to target brook trout in the Colorado Rockies. I’m relatively new to the sport, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You could check out the stowaway rod from Cabela’s. It’s a 9’ that breaks down into 6 pieces and I think they have a 7.5’ version as well but I could be wrong. Won’t break the bank either. I had the 10wt but it felt more like an 8wt to me so I returned it. Should be fine if you’re planning on having a 3-4wt, but may not want to overline if you were planning on doing that.

4 piece 9' rod is already breaking down to just 27", how short does it really need to be to be easily carried?

This. Theres no advantage to going smaller than 4 pieces, but several disadvantages. No need to complicate things

Kastking makes a decent telescopic spinning/casting rod (in different lengths that are MH or M power) called the Blackhawk II. These receive good ratings on Amazon -- 4.5 stars. I am probably going to get one for baitcasting myself in the next week.
I vote for the stowaways. I’ve had a 3wt since the 90’s for exactly what you’re talking about and it has performed flawlessly. Also I don’t worry about the replacement cost.
