Rod Travel Case Suggestions

Hey Y’all,

So I tend to travel with my two piece rods in the back seat. I drive all over the place during my week and work often takes me near good fishing spots on my way home. I typically keep 2 spinning rods (ultralight and medium light two piece rods) and a medium heavy baitcast rod (also two piece) in the back seat.

I feel like my favorite rods are going to take some damage riding as they currently are. I’m thinking the solution is some kind of hard shell that can keep them protected. I’d prefer it if the case could let me keep the reels on but a separate case for reels and rods would be acceptable.

What do you guys like for this sort of thing? If it matters, I drive on of those little hondas where the back seats fold UP against the backs and open the floor area up a bit. I typically switch those up and down pending whether I’m bringing along work equipment or stacking it up so people can ride back there.

Thanks so much for any help or advice you can provide. Have a wonderful day.

I had never seen such a thing; clever! I’ve used it to ship old school recurve bows before so it definitely makes sense. Thanks!

Yep, pvc. Super easy to build. You can probably come up with a design that allows you to keep the reels on. It’s like LEGO for adults.

Does anyone know if the PVC tube is allowed for carryon travel? Is the height an issue?

Could do a smaller rifle case with the foam padding. Then you have room for lures in the case as well. Most rifle cases also can be locked secured far easier than a diy option if air travel was a future requirement.

I’m going to price that out but I could keep my smaller tackle boxes in something like that too. I like it!

I use a special roof rack made for transporting rods. Theyre expensive (mine cost $200) but definately worth it if you have 1-piece rods you like to take around. Not having to worry about car doors and windows, not having to keep rods bent for hours, and not having them shift around while I'm driving are things that are worth the price for me to fix.

I’ve seen those; hadn’t yet considered it. I would have to see how they would look on my car but I could finally buy 1 piece rods.

Sportsman's Warehouse has a pretty good selection of decent rod cases of most sizes and types for fairly reasonable ($25-50) cost.
I have considered a rooftop, either commercial or shop-built, for years. I build custom furniture, so it might be a doable project if I can economically achieve the two things the commercial ones have....theft resistance and secure attachment to the vehicle. The good commercially available, reel-on types are $400+, sometimes locking is marginal, but they are more weather proof, as well as looking way better on your vehicle than plastic pipe. Honda, you say ? Depending on your model, might be a bit much to go for the topper for one-piece'rs, that's gonna be as long as the car ! Good luck....we should all take good care of our fishin' sticks.

Hi Hanible. My wife and I use the Big Five telescopic rod holder. Bout 42" / 96" . Plastic ammo box for your reels. We're hotel travelers these days. No worries. The large contractor garbage bag holds a 30" crab ring trap perfect.

I use a lot of white 3" PVC. cement one end and you can either get a slip fit cap for the other end or cement on a threaded collar and then get a threaded cap. Make sure the collar doesn't decrease ID. some same ID and some have a step down in ID that would restrict rod entry a bit. I color coat cap to indicate which rod is inside.
