Caught these two this morning and have never seen the tails split nor the pinkish coloring on the belly. Anybody know what's going on?

Yep a first for me as well. Thought maybe crabs got a hold of the tail but these were 20" and 17" to big for a crab to grab the tail. Plus two different locations on the river. Then there is the pinkish color on the belly. My neighbor mentioned something about showing spawning changes on them.

Possible right after being on the nest? Belly`s color up and tails all beat up too! Late summer hatch?

Thanks Ron, neighbor and I go out on the water a good bit and mentioned it was sign of spawning. Is that where you are going with your info especially with the Late summer hatch question.

They do get on there beds a few times every summer. That`s a given and their tails get beat up fanning the nest. Color could be other things like what they are eating, but appears one not pink bellied, male/female thing! The question was if recently caught not an old photo thing.

Caught them 1 1/2 hours before photo was taken.

I see their tails kind of dark, river water trout. Out in open water they get a blue tint like redfish tails! And they do go up into rivers and brackish water to spawn!

Well it looks like you have the answer here. The 20" one was caught in a cove that not many people fish at near the shore line, and the 17" was about 5' from a un used dock. Both good spawning locations. Thanks Ron.
