Hi, Jim, and welcome to the Forum. Thank you for your service.
People down here, for the most part, don't know what a Roach is, we call them, Golden Shiners. I am born and raiser, 76 year old 77 next month, fifth generation Floridian. In all those years I probably could count on one hand the times I've bought shiners, I prefer to catch my own. I use a cane pole or ultra light spinning reel with from 2 to 4 pound line and #14 or#18 hook with a very small bobber 6" to 1' above the hook, with enough weight so that the bobber's top is just visible above the water. You will need some fresh white bread. Tare a slice of bread in half, wet it and mush it up in your palm and throw it out in the water. Some will sink and some will float. You will see the shiners start to churn up the water around the bread. Pinch off a small piece of bread and roll it in a ball just large enough to cover the barb on the hook. When you see the bobber move Left, right, to, from, or down pull him in. The action can get to be intense.
The largest i ever caught was right at a pound and a half, Caught a pretty nice bass trolling that one. When you catch them you know what to do. Oh yeah I don't know about your area but down here if you you have maiden cane up there it is a plus to fish close to and out from it if you can.
Hey J H, welcome to the forum and empathy comes your way from one who shares the aches and pains from the back. I wasn't a boiler maker but in my plumbing days saw my share of them and tore quite a few down and rebuilt. Although it was on the residential end of the scale still back braking. My Air Force days didn't help much carrying a 75lb tool box up and down the flight line either. A lot of good folks here on the forum, what part of the country are you shore line fishing?

Hey Jim, from one vet (U.S. Navy Seabee) to another welcome and thanks for serving and I'm glad you made it home, brother.
Plumbob, My thanks to you too.
Come to think of it thank you to all you on active duty and all you vets.
Thanx for protecting my freedom sir. Good luck out there....some of my best catfish have come while bank fishing ! Bank fishing is a good time to do a little chumming to draw em in !
Good idea there Creekz about the chumming. I've done it out on the boat but never thought about while bank fishing. See, can teach old people new things. LOL
