I want to start using baitcasters for bass. I usually use spinning reels. Right now I'm looking at the lews mach 1, American hero, ugly stick, and Berkeley. Which should I choose. Feel free to add other combos as well. Thanks!

I put a new baitcasting combo together last year and have been very pleased. I've probably used it about 100 times in the last year and have had absolutely zero issues. I've landed some great bass with it.

Dobyns Fury FR 704C - $120.00 /&/ Kastking Spartacus Plus - $46.00

I know that seems pretty cheap for a baitcasting reel and I was pretty skeptical when placing the order, but the overwhelming positive reviews were right. It casts great and the retrieve is butter-smooth.

Wait until American Legacy Fishing has the Shimano SLX combo on sale again. IIRC it was right around $150. Very nice reel with a good braking system.

Ugly sticks are great. I think a good baitcasting reel in your price range is the Abu Garcia Silvermax. I have 2 and love 'em. They are 3 years old and still going strong.

I’ll echo that Shimano SLX combo, Shimano is really trying to get it in dealers hands with some specials buys so you could see a pretty decent combo price at some point. I’ll add however the Daiwa Fuego CT combo at $150, which is the entry model for Daiwa’s “MagForce-Z” braking system. It is a completely different system than anything else out there and in my opinion the best. It truly excels. Lews does make some nice combos too, you won’t go wrong with either of those, but I’d stay away from Ugly Stik or Berkley combos, personally.

One of my favorite set ups I have is a BPS pro qualifier 2 matched to an ABU vendetta 7'3' MH I actually have two of these set ups and I use them frequently along with several other bait casting set ups costing significantly more money... but I have to say, the pro qualifier2/vendetta combo has been a work horse for me and performed flawlessly! The Lews stuff in that range will serve you well also... on a side note, I picked up a Daiwa Pro cast combo at dicks for $99.00 and I gotta say, I actually really like the rod... reel is a on the cheap side but it works fine...

I agree. I have the Royal Legend and it’s a spectacular reel for the price! Well built, smooth, and easy to adjust to your skill level. Comparable to $150 reel. Also, the Diawa cc80 is a great reel for the price. 🏄🏼‍♂️🎣
