Hi,
New to the area of Queens/Western LI. Originally from the Bronx, then Putnam County, and now in Queens.
Have fished most of my life but mostly freshwater so trying to get a handle on where to start with saltwater fishing in the area.
I know about most of the charters but think I'm more interested in finding cool, and hopefully somewhat productive, places to fish from shore, either surf or piers.
I know about Jones Beach's pier at Field 10 thou I've never fished it. Is it worth it? How is the bait shop there? What kind of fish can I somewhat expect at what times of the year? Any tips as far as live bait or lures.
Would be more interested in accessible places to fish from shore / surf casting.
Any info would be greatly appreciated and used!!
THANKS in advance
Gary

Hi Gary - welcome to the Stage! Here's hoping someone from the area pipes in with info for you. My wife's from Merrick (Nassau) but sadly, none of her family there nor relatives from Queens or south shore fish, so unable to hook you up.
thanks for your reply DC! Wishing you tight lines :)

I play concerts at Russo's on the Bay [google it]and walk down to the water between rehearsal and concert. Always wish I had my rod with me. Check it out. Free parking a couple blocks away on the street and there are fisherman at the inlet there.

Back in the 60's I used to fish at Captree on the fishing pier (parallelto the shore). You can also try Shinnecock canal when the locks are closed. The flounder line up waiting for the gates to open. It used to be just a place to park but then it became more "modernized". Parking spaces, sidewalks, dining trucks, bathrooms, etc. Too bad. As I recall, it's sandworms on the south shore and bloodworms on the north shore of L.I.
Jones Pier can produce at times in my opinion field 6 is more productive also west end is good except for the long walk from the parking field 2 or 5 at Robert Moses can produce
Hi Surfman. THANKS for your reply! Was unaware you can fish from Robert Moses. Any tips and/or can you direct me to where I can get more info? DO I have to go to one end of the beaches or another? Obviously summertime is a different story as I do go there to go swimming and know it's crowded and think there's no where to fish then. Also, just learned of Atlantic Beach in Queens. Any experience/knowledge there?
THANKS man! :)
Thanks Kandydisbar! Will check it out! What kinda music do you play and what band?

Welcome brother, I'm not speaking from experience yet but from word of mouth and from reading about those saltwater surf fishing anglers who have laid the path and done the ground work. But I've been told on multiple occasions that Montauk, NY is the mecca of surf fishing. That's the place where you learn or burn surf fishing. Then there are places in southern and northern NJ. These places are not hard to locate or get info on if you Google it. It's hard for me to get around now since I don't have a car right now. And renting has become expensive since most places I used to deal with are charging per mile after you have used the free mileage. When you do go enjoy that man vs fish challenge, be safe and obey the rules regulations. Peace and Blessings my friend.
