We are going there tomorrow. According to the San Juan river fishing web sites float nymphs and midges bounced on the bottom.
That is our plan unless we are instructed otherwise by local fly shops.

Also use very small sizes 18,20,22,24. Bring your magnifiers for tying these little guys.

Catch and release by the dam. Big rainbows.

Thanks for the great info. I will use small nymphs at the catch and release. Maybe I will get lucky with a nice rainbow.

If there is any way you can swing it hire a local guide and float the river below the dam your first day. You will receive invaluable knowledge of the river and learn where to fish the rest of your stay. Absolutely great fishing and a great time.

I have fish to San Juan in the golden Waters up in Durango Colorado down through New Mexico. Obviously follow the hatch. There's a lot of great local shops that could help you and there's a ton of good fisherman we just spend all day chasing fish that have been more than willing to help you. It's nice to drive along the river and sea nice 5 to 8 lb trout swimming around. They protect their fish so as fishermen can really enjoy our time. Good luck and catch em up
