Hello stagers.
Marion Robert Morrison, known to us as John Wayne, was born in 1907.
The trivia question for you today is two fold.
How did Marion Robert Morrison become known as " The Duke "? and
How did he get the stage name " John Wayne "?
I'm sure that some of you western aficionados will know this one.

If I remember correctly it was a Fireman who started to call him Little Duke because he went nowhere without his little dog. Then the producers at Fox did not like his real name so they renamed him John . He didn’t like being called Little Duke so he just wanted to be called Duke. Then the producers at Fox like some guy name Anthony Wayne so That’s how he became John Wayne.

Congratulations troyfrd1 you are absolutely correct.
Marian Mossison had a dog named Big Duke.
It was indeed a fireman who called Marian Little Duke.
The little title was dropped when he was a standout football player in high school. His coach started calling him The Duke.
The name John Wayne was chosen when he began his acting career. In reference to military leader Mad Anthony Wayne.

Back in 2018 the wife and I on our cross country road trip we were in a little town (I forgot the name) where John Wayne was born and grew up. It was a little southwest of DeMoines Iowa. If I remember right. We toured there little house and there was also a museum. It was pretty cool…🐟on

John and “Big Duke”
John and “Big Duke”...

Their little house
Their little house...

And the museum
And the museum...
