How would you piece together a tapered leader for a 5wt fly line?
Don’t need one now but just curious for in the future,
Also, what about tippet? Can you just use any piece of mono for a tippet?

Ther are formulas for tying your own leaders that are published and probably available on line. Personally id rather spends the money for a pemade leader and just replace the tippet as needed. The will last a long time if you keep up on the tippet.

I’d probably rather buy them too I’m sure, but was just wondering how to put it together if I’m being too cheap

I guess I'm cheaper than you, lazier too, I just use straight mono, usually 4 pound test.

I did the same as you when I was first getting started in fly fishing. Check out the web site "Global Flyfisher"
lots of great info. The one thing that you will learn is how to tie a blood knot.

The leader "recipe " will depend on the kind of fly fishing you are doing, nymphing,
,dry fly or streamer fishing .There are tutorial videos for each application.
Tippet, 4# mono is equivalent to 5x tippet.

And maybe a 5x tippet might be what I would want to use on a 5wt line and rod throwing I’m guessing dry flies?
