Did she put them through the hill test? That was the worse on mom's 61 Impala.
Got my first license, with Dad’s 51’ Studebaker. 3 on the tree. 🌴 starter button on the floor. “Hill Holder” clutch. Wish I had it…

Dave, we had the 61 Impala 3 on the tree and a 64 station wagon automatic tran. If I couldn't pass the test on the 61 it was a no go with the licenses. Mom's tough Love for a reason.
All the work trucks when I first got into the plumbing field were 3 on the tree. Paid off learning the hard way, I got to do the lunch runs.

My first vehicle was a 50 Chevy 2 ton truck 4 speed with a 2 speed rear axle. I was 16 years old and I drove it loaded with 4 cords of oak wood up and down the Ozark mountains.

That made me think of a neighboring farmer when I was young. He had an old Ford van that was 3 on the tree. With about 10' of worn out linkages, it was interesting to say the least!! It was the standard H pattern with an extra S, F, and K involved 🤣🤪

Another advantage to 3 on the tree is down shifting when about to crash. I loss the brakes on the company truck on a hill headed straight for the house we were working in.
Choices were the house, a wood pile or go over a hill and into a pond. Well the house loss and by the time i hit what ever gear I could, no damage to the steel trucks in those days but the house had a few 2 x 4 splinters about it.
However, when I got out of the truck I held up the unspilled coffee cup. Bobby did good that day.
Funny stuff. That snake is hilarious! I'm assuming stick shift antitheft because the dumb theives don't know how to drive it?

First learned to drive around 13 years old, with a 43 Willy's jeep, 3 speed on the floor, starter on the floor. Moved up to a 61 Chevy 1/2 ton with 3 on the tree. I had to go with Mom when she drove the Chevy because the shifter linkage would occasionally slip out and I would have to pop the hood reach in and reset the linkage.
I learned on a VW beetle.
I learned young how to handle a stick on a old Allis Chalmers WC.. my 1st truck was 4 on the floor.

How about a truck with 2 sticks, on the floor. Like a 4 and a 3= 12 forward gears or a 5 and a 4= 20… they took some getting used to. Then they came out with the air assist transmissions, eliminating the second stick…
