I agree.
Make the most of WHO you're fishin with.
ESPECIALLY if it's family or GOOD friends. For there will come a day that they will be gone. Unless you go first.

For Fresh Water fish, If they are not biting make them mad! Cast your lure to the same spot 3 times and crank it in as fast as you can. If nothing aim 30 Degrees to the side and repeat. Over and over with the rod tip down.
I like to use a Gold rattle trap on Sunny Days and a Silver one on Cloudy days.
IF you have a boat, get a lake Map and look at where the drop offs are. Cast past the drop off to the deep side and bring it back again as fast as you can. They like to lay up against the side to nail any that come by above.
And fishing any structure also works. Those are the best ones I can give you for general tips.

LOL So true. I learned to make a loop at the end of the line and attach the hook with a leader on it that way.
I learned that with Mono I had to do the loop twice or it would collapse down tight. That was before there was an Internet where you could just look up how to tie the different knots. It is fast and easy to do.
I did finally have one break at the loop ( I still think it got cut on a sharp rock or glass) after 55 years of fishing. The doubled line of the loop acts as a "Shock Cord" when casting heavier weights.

Yeah, but still I feel down when I'm not getting any fish out of the water.

Hello
Just keep fishing at different times in the tide until you catch fish ,different spots have fish at different times during the tide
If you re walking the shoreline or the rocks along the beach 5 to 8 casts at each stop till you find fish
Jigs and shallow swimmers work well in salt water and fresh water Top water plugs when the water warms to mid 50 s

My one piece of advice I already knew. It was from my father. If you fish offshore make sure you have a compass and know how to use it. Electronics can fail anytime. Check you direction on the way out and add 180 Deg. to that number and you'll get home safely.

That's good advise. I fished with my grandfather out of Monterey since I was 3. He taught me how to navigate without a compass or any electronics. I navigate by the swells. There's a little guess work and timing, but I learned to get myself out and back, regardless how thick the fog was. It's good to know. You never know when your electronics can fail. I have another note of advise for the new people on the water. Never stick your hands in a Lingcod's mouth. My grandfather taught me that at a very young age. I didn't listen, like a dummy. My lingcod swallowed the hook. I stuck my hand inside to get the hook out. The Lingcod shut his mouth, and I jerked out my hand. It was shredded. With the salt water contacting it. it was on fire! Listen to your elders!

It’s called “fishing”, not “catching!”
