I just subscribed to this site sorry about late reply. I know no one talks about southern cal. I have fished with a nice 8' diawa bait casting rod and a diawa millionaire reel, it's my flipping stick but anchovies squid and gunion work for bass and perch.6 - 8lb. Test one Carolina rig

I did the Charters out of Oceanside and San Diego.
Fly lining live anchovies in the kelp beds for Calico Bass was always my favorite. Scampi plastics in root beer and Chartreuse work great for the big Sand Bass.

Yellows should start getting good late May early June so get your gear ready you'll want your rod and reel in good shape if you don't want to get off the boat needing to go buy new ones,
