Ok I understand the fly line and the backing, I also understand the leader, please explain the tippet to me, what’s it for? Do you need it?
I picked up a 9ft 5wt fly rod came 4 pieces rod a reel fly line backing and leader plus rod case and reel case and fly box, no flies, no tippet.
I’m going to go to the lake and play with it tomorrow just to see about how to cast.
How do I work this thing?

The tippet just extends the life of the leader. As pieces break off or are retired to change flies, the end gets shorter. You just tie on a new end to give you the size line you need on the terminal end.
