Still trying to buy a outboard motor or a boat with a 150 hp outboard. Found a Mercury 150hp motor for $900 looked like a good deal. Asked if he could start it up and show me it was running or have it running when I came to look at. He said he didn't know how to do that. He had a friend who worked on motors tell him he wouldn't try to start it without changing the oil. tuning it up and cleaning the carbs. I told him do that and I would come look at it. He said no he had people coming to look and he was sure one would buy it as I. Told him I wouldn't. Everyone wants me to buy their problem. Have 1 left on my list who answered my messages and has agreed to sending me a video of his motor running. Bass boat with 150 Mercury trolling motor 3 batteries 2 fish finders and trailer for $2000 this had better work out because wife getting irritated because I'm spending too much time looking for a motor

Don't buy it just seein a VIDEO of it runnin.
If he can't SHOW you that it presently runs when you look at it, then don't buy it.

When I sold my boat back in Aug the guy ask me if the motor ran. I told him it runs GREAT.
He ask me if I would start it up and I told him I didn't want to in the lot without putting the muffs and water to it.
He said he just wanted to make sure it ran and I wouldn't have to run it long.
I told him I would fire it up for a few sec is all without water.
I hit the starter and it fired up immediately. Ran great and I turned it off.
The guy bought the boat and I've never heard from him again. He got a great deal too. Still miss that boat.

Hope your wife understands that you are doing your homework. If you buy one that is a lemon 🍋 she will really be upset with you. It is worth the cost to get a mechanic to check it out first. Good luck dbed

The video is so I know it will run before I drive 2 or 3 hours to do my due diligence after I get there. She knows that I already bought a lemon. If this works out I will have the option of using the bass boat or putting the motor on the deck boat or you could say on my lemon

In the late 90s when I bought an older fiberglass Skeeter bass boat I met the seller at the lake and he showed me everything about it and took me out to show me how great it ran and after loading it on the trailer pulled the plug and no water came out. Then the next boat I bought in 2013 the owner was able to start it up with the ears for water input and it started right up the only mistake I made was not putting water in the hull to check for leaks. It is a aluminum smokercraft riveted deep V and it had a few small leaks that I was able to seal. And after many times out it has developed more small leaks that I was mostly was able to stop by using flex seal on the inside of the hull, and I’ve added 2 bilge pumps that will take care of small amounts of water after 4or 5 hours on the water.

I plan on putting this boat in the water might have to make the guy do it before I'll buy it

Is there a time stamp on the video? It could be old.

I wish you were down here to buy a boat there's lots of nice motors on older boats for sale, I just bought this 16' big John boat with a 2022 50hp 4 stroke with only 25 hours on it still has 2 years warranty on it, the boat has some small leaks in it. I only paid $3000 for boat motor and trailer, he gave me the paperwork where he just paid $6700 for the new motor.
He wife just left him and he needed cash right then, I'm going put the motor on my 18' pontoon boat which I bought last year with a bad motor on it..🎣🎣

My wife got a little irritated with me when I was looking for the old Lund we now have and use. We had a good working 14 ft boat but needed something a little bigger that would work in larger lakes. Now she doesn't mind my looking for another project boat.

Me and my brother got suckered in by my future bosses brother once, go fiqure. Anyway we got to the meeting spot 30 minutes early and he was already out running the kinks out of the boat. Two months later we had to buy a new motor, kind of hard lesson for a 15 and 17 YO dishwasher.

Dbed, you have to be careful even with boat motors that will crank up and run. I had an old 1996 Mercury 150 XRi that would crank up and run fine, up to 3000 rpm. Then it would go no faster. I spent over $1,500 replacing stator, trigger module, switch boxes, regulators, ignition switch, etc. All that did not fix the problem. I put a new Yamaha 150 SHO on the boat and sold the old motor on boat trader for $1,100. I told the buyer about the issue and all I had already done to it. He bought it in spite of all that. I was happy to just get some of my money back for all the new parts I had put on it. I also started and ran it for him when he arrived, and he even removed it from my boat.
So, if you can get someone to take the boat out and actually run the engine through all rpms and conditions, you would be better off.

every motor i have ever bought i would do a compression test on all the cylinders, no matter if we ran it on the water or not. HF has compression testers that work great and are inexpensive and you can rent them from the local auto parts stores. there are many videos showing how to do a test and check outboard (or any motors) psi. i always felt a lot better knowing my psi readings. just my opinion.
good luck, i hope everything works out great for you!

I have bought and sold several boats and motors over the years. If the seller won't start the motor or lake test the boat. I don't buy, or negotiate price assuming motor is junk. Compression testing is very simple. Leave guage on long enough to test for "leak down" of compression also.
