Made a solo day trip to Elephant Butte Lake yesterday. Managed a decent haul of white bass along with a smallmouth from shore which was a nice surprise. Beautiful day.

Has the lake caught any water??
Fished it many times in the mid 80’s to mid 90’s. Could boat from the state park to about 5 miles up the Rio Grande

Thanks Gray. I usually go to Caballo Lake which is just south of the Butte so it’s more convenient for me. But honestly I’ve done better overall at the Butte through the years.

I hear it’s at about 30 percent, a lot higher than it’s been for quite a few years. The 80s were my favorite times to go because you could drive way north on I 25 to the Red Rock exit and head to a place called the narrows and really catch em. We would flip for largemouth from a small rowboat in the submerged cottonwoods. Good memories.

That’s where we would put in also. I liked the cove on the east side of the river just north of the narrows.

Yup. There used to be a whole section of the lake up there above the narrows. Great fishing. We would also fish the narrows from shore right beneath the rock house. I see you’re from lake fork. Never been there but heard it’s legendary.

Its great fishing right now. Bass are either in the spawn or transitioning into the spawn. catching a lot of 5 to 8#'ers that in the slot.
Lots of fun.

Elephant butt was a favorite of mine. fished many tournaments on the lake, and would catch a variety of fish, blacks, small mouth, white bass crappie and catfish all on the same bait many times.
my favorite bait there was the larew salt craw.

Sounds amazing. My brother in law went down there a couple years back and caught a bunch. Some kind of guided trip.
Thanks for the bait info! My favorite for spring believe it or not was a chartreuse beetle spin! We would catch the same variety of fish.

Also try a 1/4 oz underspin with a swimsenko. Color watermelon red.
