We used cook a whole pig in the ground and to check the doneness we would poke it with a long pointed rod. This may not be the answer but I'm sticking to it 🤣

Con artists used to catch any animal and stuff it in a bag and try to sell it.

Pig in a Poke. A Poke/Bag was offered for sale and IF smart, one would look inside to see if it was true or if it was a Cat in the Bag. Old, old scam.

I'm going with Gordon, buying something unseen 😂 the poke (paper bag) has nothing to do with the item, it could be a car or anything you buy without seeing it 👍

I agree about the bag or sack, but I believe it was used to carry your money or coins. So I think a pig in a poke would be a worthless bag.

Hello stager
Yes A pig in a poke does refer to buying something sight unseen , and Yes a poke is a bag or gunny sack.
But where did the term originate?
As the story goes in the early 19th century a farmer sold a cat in a gunny sack claiming it to be a suckling pig at a market. The merchant bought it without looking into the bag.
This also lead to the expression " Let the cat out of the bag".
