Hi guys, I am putting Lithium batteries in my boat but some people told me it is not a good idea to have lithium for starting and the graphs. I'm looking for some comments. Thanks

What happens if I put lithium battery in water?
Do not expose the battery to water or moisture. Water can corrode or damage the internal battery safety devices and cause the battery to overheat, ignite, rupture or leak.

Why do lithium batteries catch fire in water?
In the case of up-and-coming solid-state batteries with a lithium metal anode (instead of the more common graphite anode), these have a rather unwelcome talent for chemical reactions when they come into contact with water. Instead of snuffing out the flames, water could actually fuel the fire and cause it to intensify.Sep 28, 2023

What happens if lithium is dropped in water?
Effervescence: Lithium reacts violently with water, producing hydrogen gas, which bubbles out of the solution. The reaction is exothermic, which means it releases heat. Formation of a Basic Solution: The reaction between lithium and water produces lithium hydroxide (LiOH) and hydrogen gas (H2).

Can I start my boat with a lithium battery?
Starter – No. Standard lithium batteries are not designed for starter use. Having said that, there is a type of battery (Sterling with different BMS) that can be used for starting, but it is up to three times the cost of standard lithium.

If you are looking to use a lithium battery as a cranking battery in your car, truck, RV or boat then the answer is a resounding no.

I have Miller Tech lithium in my boat.
Make sure your motors alternator does not exceed the voltage output stated on the battery size u select.
Mercury came out in 2023 ok’ing the use of lithium batteries with their motor.

I’m not a battery expert and I did a lot of reading and talking to different battery manufacturers before I equipped my boat with them.
I put 2-36 volt & 1-12 volt Millertech batteries on the boat
These batteries have an app that u can download on your phone and can check the charge level of each batter at any time.

It’s pretty simple answer. Yes use lithium ( if you’re really in need of spending a bunch of money ) for trolling motors etc but realize the main reason they are cool to have is recovery time ( charging) other than that they are a little overrated.

Use deep cell for starter. You can add an isolator/regulator to charge your trolling batteries while engine is running. Lithium or lead acid. The danger with lithium is also if take wave over the gunnel or anywhere. I wouldn’t invest in them unless I had an electric main motor.

I agree with "theconversation.com", Lithium reacts violently with water as does potassium or sodium. They are all in the same family on the periodic chart.

I partially agree with u Jeremy. Lithium batteries are just like agm and other batteries. They are sealed and would have to have damage to the case for the water to reach the lithium cells.
Quick recharge 10 yr warranty with full replacement over 4000 recharge times.
They are a more costly but 10 to 12 yrs of use per battery
Also you have a full 12 volt, 24, or 36 voltage till the battery is completely dead
I’ve fished 2 full days here on fork 6 to 7 hours running 4 garmin 126 sv. Chartplotters and a garmin 36 volt trolling motor without recharging.
Not pushing lithium but don’t want untruths on the water issue

LifePO4 batteries are are a good investment in my opinion for running equipment and electric motors. But definitely not starting you gas engine. I run Lithium batteries in my motorhome and on my boat, as I have ruined numerous deep cycle batteries in the past running them below 50%, not understanding that it quickly ruins the battery.

I run a 24v LiFePO4 Dakota battery for my trolling motor and a 12v Redodo LiFePO4 for my 2 depth/fish finders. I use a lead battery for cranking the gas engine, live wells, and dash electronics (gauges).
The only issue I have with the lithium batteries happens in cold weather. They do not like to charge and do not run as long in cold 40 degrees and colder.
