Have no idea CB, Iโm pretty sure the gattlin gun was around in the 1870โs or so. Donโt know if that qualifies as a machine gun though. Love Born to be Wild, an absolute classic!

Iโm going with the model 1862 Gatling Gun. I believe the model number applies to the date of its operational debut.

Iโll go with the 19th century.
What impressed me was the technology developed that allowed a machine gun to be mounted on a prop plane that would shoot between the propeller whirling.
Hello stagers,
This answer will surprise you.
The first machine gun was actually made in China in the 17th century.
It was a hopper filled spring loaded cannon.
It is said be highly unsuccessful and could not be mass-produced and was very short lived.
The Gattlin gun, that we are all familiar with, was the first successful machine gun that could be mass-produced.
Thanks for playing along.
I'll shoot for some more trivia soon.

General Thompson would have been unhappy to learn the Chinese beat him out. I think he considered his Tommy Gun the first one invented.

The Puckle gun was the first that I am familiar with.
The Gatling gun, is NOT a machine gun, neither in design nor by NFA34/ATF definition. The GE minigun, an electrically enhanced version of the Gatling gun, is classified as a machine gun, due to continuous operation by one pull and hold of the trigger/switch/fire control.
